That said, there actually is a functioning vaccine now. It exists and is being used on humans and it works. The big tests could fail but it seems likely there will be a vaccine 4-6 months from now.

Presumably the media and average age of the deaths exceed 80 (still) and the vast majority of deaths are of people with at least two life threatening conditions.

Assuming this is true -- and for some reason it is not easy to find the data on this stuff although it is quite important -- then it is safe to assume that many of these folks would have died sans the Covid.

The CDC has plots of excess deaths, which indicate that no, many of these people would not have died absent COVID-19. You can see those here:

We have a month-plus thankfully to hash out the school opening stuff. I've seen some people theorizing young children don't spread the virus at a high rate, but saying there is evidence that high-schoolers do. There's probably not a one-size-fits-all move to this. Telling Florida teachers they have to go to work now is different than saying the same to teachers in the Northeast or Midwest.

Public schools open Aug17 here (virtual). Other public schools in the area as soon as Aug03.

For a lot of the major public school systems it has been hashed out already.

Maybe, but bear in mind that the *antibody* test(s) apparently can also show positives for other viruses, including rhinoviruses (i.e. the common cold).

In any case, remember that in the 2009 H1N1 pandemic (for which Obama got a lot of criticism), 12,xxx Americans died over twelve months and the CDC estimated that 60 million were infected.

Even if 30mm Americans have been infected by SARS-CoV-2 (and that would seem to be about the upper limit now), COVID-19 looks at least twenty times as deadly as that H1N1.

So are you saying all of these tests are really quite meaningless , and if so why would we give credibility to anything coming from the CDC?

All the states suffered from a lack of federal support that was needed to take advantage of a shutdown strategy. That's why the US is doing so much worse than Europe.

Other nations who shut down and also followed through with economic and tactical support are doing very well.
