Russia's war effort is going to become even more dysfunctional now that Putin has demoted Surovikin and put Gerasimov back in charge. Surovikin was the first relatively competent general to run the war in Ukraine. He stopped Ukraine's fall counteroffensive and has been able to fortify defenses to hold the front with Ukraine since then. What he has not been able to do is coordinate effectively with Wagner PMC and Prigozhin has been blaming Surovikin for lack of progress even though Wagner is just as much to blame as the regular armed forces.
