Why is this website so out of touch how hard it is for most normal people to run?

I didn’t mean it that way really. sorry. I think you’re putting yourself down too much. Just give it a go. Start with something like 2 miles a day if anything more is too hard, and just keep building up.

Those are great 5K time in your 40s and 50s!

All runners age at a different rate. I once read that most runners have a twenty year window in which to see improvements either as a younger runner or as an older runner.

I peaked as a master at age 47 with Masters PRs of 15:07 (5K), 32:12 (10K), 1:07:30 (half), 2:27:04 (marathon).

My times fell off quickly after that, though I held it together with lots of duck tape for another 10 years, with the wheels completely falling off at age 60.

When I retired from "racing" to recreational running, my body didn't adjust well to running slower, my efficiency and form went to pot and I started to get injuries continuously, making it finally not to much fun to run anymore. I swallowed hard and hung it up a year ago at age 65 deciding I didn't want to be a cripple at age 70 and still be able to enjoy the things I enjoy.

Now I just walk (with occoasional jogging sometimes thinking hey, I can still do this thing!...nah), lift weights and ride an elliptical.

Enjoy the journey my friend, enjoy it while you still can, and embrace your aging process.

Did you never ask yourself the question what you COULD have run had you started earlier and peaked in your 20s with higher VO2MAX and muscle strength? Those are amazing times for your age, but your potential as younger guy was probably substantially above these times.

I did start running at an early age. Through high school, D1 college, through my twenties and thirties. Just so happened I aged slower than most and was able to run well through my forties.

I've always said you can't put in what God left out. I think I got the most out of the body I was given.

Well, I ran 5k in low-15's in college and again after college in my mid-20's Then ran 15:55 in my mid-40's. So, not a huge difference. I trained my ass off all thru my 20's trying to get faster but my body just couldn't get past that limit. I'm sure it didn't help that my 400 speed was only 61 seconds, even with loads of speedwork. Running 15:55 for 5k twenty years later as an older guy was nice and I guess just showed that I had staying power but not much talent.

I didn't run regularly from age 18 to about age 33 and I will always wonder what I could have done in my 20s with the level of training that I do now.

This thread gives me hope.

If a short, fat 5'2'' runner like me can break a 3:30 marathon with minimal training and 45-55 mpw average weeks, I'm curious to see what I'd do with a coach, a better diet, and a more structured plan. A woman I know ran 2:58 but she ran 70-80 mpw. I may have to get to that level to see if I can get down to 3:15 or 3:20.
