Getting late here in Berlin and I’m bored. Here are 10 random thoughts:
1. The Germans know how to do public transportation. Buses and trains run often and on-time, and there are no turn-stiles or ticket takers. You just get on, honor system style.
2. Berlin is a weird mix of beautiful old structures like the Brandenburg Gate, post-war buildings that are generally not so beautiful (esp in the east), and then more modern stuff that has sprung up in the dead zone previously occupied by the Wall.
3. Berlin is really spread out. Few skyscrapers. There’s no skyline like in most big American cities. Gives it a strange feel.
4. The Tiergarten is a runners paradise. Imagine a flat Central Park with less people, more trees, and all hard packed gravel trails/roads.
5. You have to pay to use most public bathrooms. It’s only like 50 cents, but still annoying.
6. There’s a German TV station showing the Texas A&M vs Arkansas football game. I had no idea that was a thing over here. Listening to the German announcers was pretty hysterical for the first 5 minutes, but now I’d prefer even the worst American announcer, I.e. Musberger.
7. It feels good outside. Mid 50s and a light breeze. Rain has stopped. Not my dream conditions, but it’s workable. (Shirtless of course).
8. I have not seen any elites. Bekele is apparently afraid to show his face to the giraffe that plans to run his suicidal ass down.
9. No matter how well I’ve trained, self-doubt always creeps in during the taper. It can be something as stupid as a sluggish shakeout run. Gotta remind myself of all the miles and workouts that I accumulated before the taper.
10. I have no idea what’s in store tomorrow. Hopefully the magic happens, but if it doesn’t, it’s been a fun ride. I appreciate all the support from my RR&T friends.
