Maybe the Americans would do better at UTMB if it started in the morning instead of 6PM.
Why start a 100 mile race at 6PM? Starting it at close to dawn means if you finish in under 24hrs there's a higher proportion of daylight to nighttime running.
Like god, imagine flying halfway across the world, being jet lagged AF, and then running 100 miles at 6 PM. Forget the course/conditions, that alone sounds awful.

You a55clowns are missing the point. Walmsley could have continued running and winning and setting course records at every 50 mile race he could find. Instead, he has chosen to not only run 100 milers, but the biggest and most competitive in the world. He even has the guts to run courses that may not suit his best style of running.
When any of you gutless clowns go over and run UTMB, be sure to post under your real name and tell us how you did.
What I think we can all agree on is that it's awesome that Jim is part of it as it gives us all something to talk about. I love is approach to running even if he blows up half of the time!!

Don't be so generous. He doesn't blow up half the time. He blows up 6 out of 7 times when there's competition. We don't care about him winning minor American races. He has a mental block when he faces competition.
Guys, you are all missing the point on Walmsley's DNF.
He dropped to save his legs for Marathon Trials in 2020.

I may be wrong, but I think Kilian didn't run UTMB since 2011, when he won, until 2017, when he was a close 2nd. So it seems he has the race figured out alright.

You are saying he is a winner because he wins races that nobody good shows up to, the talent base at those races is slim. Whenever he does sub ultra events he doesn't race against the top guys, he chooses small races where the talent of the field is low. How has he done at world championships? Bad. Because there is comp. The guy is a pro dodger and picks races he can win. I respect guys like King, Gray and Canaday more for lining up with big time racers. Gray and King have happened to excel against East African athletes and medaled at major champs, Walms has yet to prove he can race with comp. Breaking western record isn't a big deal in reality being that there is no incentive beyond media attention for winning it, so top athletes internationally don't flock there

The problem with Walmsley is that he and his fanboys think that he can go out and crush the competition. BUT it doesn't work that way in 100 miler. Especially not in a mountainous 100 miler. You have to take care of yourself. Just trying to be in front of some other runners is just a distraction. And that is what Walmsley is doing. Everybody has DNF's once awhile but it seems the standard for Walmsley in the long races.
Again, he is a great runner up to 50 miles. In longer distances there are a lot of guys who are better and more consistent than him.

No, I'm in my 70's and don't run anymore. Wish that I could, but I'm doing other things now.

Problem is Walmsley training 30 hours per week, talking bold and going home devastated without saying a word not this guy ability to run 100 milers. Stop it, no one cares.

Over decades of ultrarunning I have seen a lot of great ultrarunners. Walmsley is not one of them. He is just a wining kid who does not seem to get what makes you successful in 100 mile mountain races.
No it's not 3 weeks of preparation on the Hardrock course just before the UMTB.
Walmsley is insecure and covers that with more training. That is not a good recipe for success.
