Salazar probably thought that if Kejelcha ran at 12:46 pace nobody would hang with it.

Personally with that level of drafting I think Barega probably saved something like 1 - 2 seconds a kilometre. Maybe it's a 12:50 solo? Bekeles run was much stronger for sure but it shows that with the correct pacing and pacemaking it's possible to break.

I literally think if Bekele had the exact same situations these guys had he would of gotten 12:30. I can't wait until Bekele gets the wr for the full mary so he will have the 5,000m in and out, 10,000m and 2,000m in wrs as well as the full mary all at the same simultaneous time. We all know Bekele is the greatest. This race is just a repeat of the Paris race in 2012 where they ran fast but didn't achieve anything significant after that again.

Probably a test. Think Paul Tergat vs Haile Gebreselassie. Paul Tergat was the taller guy with the smoother running stride, but he did never beat Haile in a man-to-man champ over the last laps. Kejelcha is the tallest guys on the circuit, but the Mo Farah tactic of taking it from 800 meters out don't seem to work for him against shorter guys with higher cadence kicks.

Then again, now they know that taking it from 2000 meters out isn't working either. NOP might have signed the wrong man for track medals. If he's top 3 in Copenhagen in two weeks he'll probably be Nike's new Sub 2 project man instead.

It was a masterpiece race, but also a masterful demonstration of why nobody likes to take important races out hard. It almost doesn't matter how fast you go, there's always the chance that someone sits on you whilst you do the work and takes you in the end.

Kiplagat did the same thing to Kiprop in his first world record attempt. Kiplagat came away with a new huge 3:27 PB and the win. You never know how fast someone might be able to run.

You also never know how well others can kick. Maybe if Kejelcha let it go out slow he would have done even worse. That would have let big kickers like Edris and Chelimo into the race. I think that if the race was won in 13:05, Kejelcha would have had his hands full with the two that actually beat him yesterday as well as Edris and Chelimo.

Perhaps, but generally runners feel safer running within themselves knowing they have energy in reserves. It's a thought time when you've run to your limit and someone kicks past, when you just have nothing to respond with.

I tried watching it last night and fell asleep at the 9th minute (into the race). I went to sleep without knowing the result.

I did watch it this morning and it was great!

Barega will clearly run 12:30 or thereabout.

He is great talent adn will definitely b epushed by those other great athletes. Ethiopia has a gem here.

No its actually expanding the boundaries of whats possible at a young age with extreme talent.

The new generation will make sub 13 a standard.

A paced race in a couple of years or sooner will get him the world record.

drafting is worth 1 second per lap in practice, but if you have several guys and some are big, it's more, a relative vacuum is created say behind 3 guys clumped together and actually pulls you forward rather than simply blocking the "wind".

then if you have a very fast track and conditions, that is about 0.5 seconds per lap above average.

combine the two, and the athlete is peak, you got the huge PR.

the perfect storm - the perfect race.

athletes that get that big Monaco PR, are fooled into thinking the time is real, but a Monaco 332 is a 336 in normal circumstances.

that is why a guy like wheating could run 330, and everything else was around 334 plus.

now people are getting it.

really to pick guys and gamble, you're better off looking at the top 5 times and actually throw away the best time - all Monaco results - to get a read on the real ability of a runner.

similarly in the London OG, everyone in the field ran a full second better than their normal peak ability.
