Actually, Roes was known to throw down some beer, yes. Don't know if he overdid it, though. What Roes and Walmsley have in common is a huge amount of anaerobic training and racing and lack of recovery. Not sure about Roes's food intake. Oh, and to add to that, Roes was also quite arrogant about his training and racing methods when questioned about it. When his downfall began and he was questioned by people who seemed to know what they were talking about, he became quite defiant. Those who questioned him ended up being quite right, even though they were pretty jerky about it.
Well he's no Scott Jurek, that's for sure.
Jurek's seven consceutive Western States wins is likely to not equaled in the near or far future. Although the competition is faster these days overcoming the distance and course extremes is still a battle in itself. Not sure is Walmsley is self coached but he should seek out some better racing advice. Don't discount all the veterans who may not have been blazing fast but know how to race 100 miles.
Also, take a listen to the DFL podcast interview he did a few weeks ago (link earlier in this thread). Walmsley is completely and utterly clueless. I feel bad for the guy because he is headed for oblivion. And none of the ultra fan boys have the balls to tell him his is lost.

Jealous of what? Did you listen to that DFL podcast? Listen to it. Get on Strava. Quit being a fanboy and look at his training and racing for the past three years. Be objective and determine if his training was good training. Going fast all the time doesn't mean you're going to do well at the race. Anybody who knows about running knows that you shouldn't leave your race in your training. While everyone was gawking at his amazingness in chasing Strava CRs, smart people were saying 'What the FFF are you doing?'
And in case anyone forgot about Roes's arrogance whilst in the midst of his breakdown, here's the comment board on his blog. Pay attention to a guy named 'Cloud' (who ended up being right), all the fanboys and their reactions, and Roes's reactions.

7 days out does a 'jog' up Squaw Peak (1.1 mi, 1200' climb) at 109 degrees at an insanely fast pace. 14 min to top, 25 min round trip. Earlier that day did a 9.5 mile loop in McDowells, 2000' climbing at 10 AM at quite an insane pace. 159 avg, got up into 180s.
8 days out, mile intervals on track in the heat. 14 miles total.
So his 'taper' involved virtually ALL anaerobic running, in extreme heat. So stressful on the body no matter your age. AND he was drinking beer and probably eating like shit. Not a smart taper IMHO.
Analysis of his daily training prior to those 8 days showed a LOT of anaerobic running. There was no aerobic base building period dating back to 2015. Lots and lots of interval training and racing with virtually no down time. Combine all that with his diet of eat whatever you want including lots of sugar and garbage. NOT surprising that he blew up. Honestly, I can't believe he went as long as he did. This could be another Geoff Roes in the making.
Virtually none of that is anaerobic, and the only thing that gives me pause is the hot runs he did. I would also take HR readings with a grain of salt since he seems to have an optical HR monitor, which is notoriously inaccurate.
You're looking in the weeds when the only thing that's wrong is how he raced -- if he was really overtraining like you think, he wouldn't have been able to go as fast as he did for as long as he did. The problem wasn't a couple beers and it wasn't the (pretty reasonable, IMO) taper, it was going out too hard and failing to adjust before he got to a bad place. He deserves to get some shit for talking himself up so much, but blowups happen to everyone.
Boy, someone has a hard on for this guy. Anyomous posts , all written in the exact same style repeating over and over he got a DUI and was not honorably discharged . Realtively minor stuff. And Western States is a niche event. If this place showed IP addresses all the anti-Walmsley posts would be from the same locale.

I agree with you to the extent any posts engage in ad hominem attacks on Mr. Walmsley's character. Other posts, however, are geared towards his future given the massive training and racing and lifestyle choices. Fan boys do Mr. Walmsley zero justice by encouraging recklessness. There are real consequences for the sort of thing he is doing to his body, the least of which is DNFing in a race.
Yeah, whoever posted the last post under the name 'Alfredo' isn't me. So I do not apologize for anything. I stand by what I say and yes his heart rate is quite high for the distance he is doing. Reasonable taper? In what universe? Three days hardly makes a good taper. Even one week for a 100 mile race is short.
My basic question is why in the world would someone try to break the course record before winning the race? Isn't a win more important? Jim paid lip service to the idea that he wanted to win over the CR this year in the interview; why did he give up on that?
