If the word is being used literally, I don't know what synonym would be preferable. I don't think there's really another commonly used word for "deprived of the right to vote," and it's kind of clunky to use the whole phrase when a single word exists to convey the same meaning.

I'm not sure why these words aggravate me so much, but it is probably just because they so overused, at least in "literary" circles, where people like to pretend they are more useful to society than any other major.
