Wasn't there a guy in the long jump who finished top 3 and hit the qualifying standard (which he didn't already have) but the jump was wind aided so he didn't qualify and the spot went to someone else? Now that is devastating.

I am voting for Wheating...lots of talk and then choked...
I'll say it again. The answer is Felix in the 200M and all of the other posts are not even close. She has owned the event for over a decade. The IAAF arranged the meet format to accommodate her 200/400 double. She is probably the only US team member that is recognized by sports fans outside of the tiny, niche, cultish, increasingly marginalized and insignificant world of T&F. Then again, these boards belong to white distance runners who are a subset of a tiny, niche, cultish, increasingly marginalized and insignificant world of T&F.

Mary Cain. Although written off early in the season, her more recent interviews indicated she was rounding into form just in time for the trials. The hope was that she would be in a position to pop a ~4:03 and if not win the trials outright at least make her first Olympic team. Unfortunately it was not to be. Keep working for 2020, Mary!
How can you feel that Mary Cain's experience was more devastating than say Leo Manzano's or Ben True's?
Manzano has won Nationals 5 times and placed top three for 10 consecutive years. I don't think there is one single other athlete that is true for (due to injuries, age, and just bad luck). He has also won one silver medal and has superior PRs to someone like Mary Cain.
He is 31 yo and likely will not make it to the next Olympics where he will be nearly 36 yo.
Ben True placed 4th in the 2013 Nationals in BOTH the 5k and 10k. Last year he made the team in BOTH the 5k and the 10k and placed 6th at Worlds and won the NY DL Meeting in the 5k, increasing his expectations for success in making the team this year. His PRs are much closer to the top than Mary Cain's.
He is 30 yo and will likely have a hard time making it in 4 years time. Adding to his frustration, he has NEVER made an Olympic Team.
Mary Cain is just 20 yo and if she can improve she can try for Olympic Teams at age 24, 28 and 32. She has had two very weak years now (2014, 2015 and 2016 so far) for the most-talented middle-distance HSer to ever run in the US. I don't see how you could think she was "devastated" this weekend seeing how she could not have possibly thought she could ever have placed in the top-3.
I could name 15 people who were more "devastated" (and should be) than Cain this past week.
Uceny is a terribly awkward runner
Ryan Hall. He's been coaching Sarah Hall. She "ran" really poorly. REALLY,REALLY poorly.
ROJO = TOTALLY DEVASTATED BY TORRENCE

Felix goes home with the fastest time in the world in the 400--and she did that on a sprained ankle--and likely favorite status for Rio.
All of the distance runners go home more devastated than that.
I can't believe nobody has said Courtney Okolo? Although I'm sure we will have her on the 4x4.
How many potential medalists are we leaving home? I hate that we don't have a system in place that ensures we send our best team like so many other countries do.
NBC
Jenkins, if he had started his kick 5m sooner he would be an Olympian

And anyone who watched either of them.
Kenny Albert because all dem hot biyatches said no.
It has to be Katie Mackey. Did you see her post-race interview.
Why do people on here take such delight in highlighting failure. It would be great if posters had to show their real name together with prs and race history. I would bet that the worst trolls are the biggest failures.
Not highlighting failure...in fact, I respect her heart and how she left everything out there in that effort. Love how much she cares.

I'm not giving my name and my PRs suck, but I couldn't agree more. Why do letsrunners gloat in the "failure" of athletes who came up short at the Olympic trials? And how stupid the athletes are for using a race strategy that didn't quite work. Or in the case of Robby Andrews, criticize him for being such a loser because he came in second and is going to the Olympics and ran right at his PR but somehow didn't race the way the manly men of letsrun would have.

I'd say Letsrunners were most devastated.
A bunch of athletes made the Olympic team and weren't busted for drugs or DQed and seemed really happy. Devastating.
This.

At the end of the trials, Felix is going to Rio where she will likely win 2 or 3 gold medals. How is that more devastating than going home?
