Unlike some fans I don't worship Dean or Roy. They are just basketball coaches and they are human. This culture most certainly did not originate with Dean Smith though. It originated with a bad hire in the AFAM department.

This is straight from the report:

"Despite her love for the University, she often told people that she had a difficult experience during her student years at Chapel Hill, feeling that she was left adrift by a faculty and staff that focused on “the best and the brightest” and failed to pay attention to students like herself who needed direction and support. Because of that experience, Crowder felt a strong affinity for students with academic or other challenges in their lives. She believed it was her duty to lend a helping hand to struggling students, and in particular to that subset of student-athletes who came to campus without adequate academic preparation for Chapel Hill’s demanding curriculum."

The situation in the AFAM department was created by Crowder. The word on easy classes travels fast and it didn't take long for the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes to start exploiting the situation. It is not the athletic department's job to determine whether or not a class is up to par, that is up to the Deans and the Chancellor.

In the report you can see that the higher up Deans let the AFAM department run autonomously for the entire period in question with no meaningful reviews. Some academic advisors for the general student body caught on that something was fishy in the AFAM department but the info either never made it to the higher ups or was ignored. This doesn't surprise me one bit, because knowing the environment around Chapel Hill, anyone questioning the legitimacy of AFAM's curriculum would likely have been shamed as a racist.

I am late to this party, but all I have to say is that giving these kids so many favors does not benefit them in the long run. Life is not an easy ride, and it takes a lot of work and effort to be successful. The sooner that a person realizes that, the better off they will be.

If the people who ran college sports or booster clubs actually cared about these kids beyond their performance, they would not allow these things to happen.

Your friends being good people has nothing to do with how rigorous their undergrad course work was. The point I was making is that you can cake walk through any public schools liberal arts programs. The AFAM paper classes were a joke but not really any easier than many of the classes I took that were considered legitimate.

You're also dead wrong on the second point. The report blames the academic culture of allowing tenured professors unchecked freedom to teach and grade as they please. Nyang’oro was subject to almost no oversight simply because he was an esteemed academic. A successful private business would never give a middle manager so much power.

Have you read the report's supplemental information/emails? What you stated just isn't true. The coaches/advisers/ and multiple departments - not just AFAM - were all in this together. It is rather remarkable how openly they discuss using the fake classes to keep an athlete eligible. The Women's Soccer coach even shows his gratitude to an adviser for getting permission to lure a top ranked recruit by promising "online" and "paper" classes. (He compares her to Mia Hamm).

You have to read all the supplemental information to appreciate the depth of corruption. Conveniently, many emails were "lost" when UNC upgraded their computer system. Even with the "loss" of those emails, there are still many incriminating ones.

Dean Smith was a control freak. The thought that he did not control every aspect of every one of his player's lives-- including their academic eligibility-- is in my mind unlikely.

Back in the early 1980's, my collegiate track team stayed in the Chapel Hill area for 4 days and trained during Spring break. We were getting ready for Devils Delirium meet at Duke on that Saturday.

We noticed that there was a brand new 280Z parked in front of the older gym every day !

The license plates said something like "Heels 23"

When I asked the UNC Track coach: Who owns that car ?"

His reply was; You can't figure it out ???

UNC has always cheated !

The point however is that the classes were not really set up to convenience the kids..rather for UNC, so they could PASS grades and contribute to the profits and pay of the unversity and staff. Isn't it abundently clear that these schools and NCAA don't give a damn about these kids and their academic prowess or work ethic.

Yes, I do blame the scandal on big money greed and circling of wagons on the university level. Not absurd at all to ask for more emphasis on ethics, not athletic profits. I would assert that more liberal arts and PhDs and fewer MBAs would really help cure the ethical cancer occuring at D1 NCAA schools.

True. UNC was amazingly blatant and arrogant in their total disregard for educational integrity. So many other schools, many maybe not so blatant, but also integrity challenged.

Ironically, one of the biggest participants in the scam was UNC Professor, Jan Boxill.

She was the chairwoman of the faculty from 2011-14. In addition, she was a professor in the Philosophy Department and get this - the Director of the Parr Center for ETHICS! She wrote a book entitled Front Porch Ethics. She also gave presentations with such titles as "Using Sports as a Public Forum for Ethics". When the allegations first surfaced, she was "shocked"! You can't make this stuff up.
