Too much console lovers here. The purists in my would argue that
1. Counter Strike
2. Half life 2
2. Star Craft
3. War craft 3
4. Zelda : breath of the wild
5. Hades (maybe this should be rated higher, time will tell)
6. Witcher 3

I'm replaying the Witcher 3, this time on switch. I thought I would need a controller and large screen to enjoy it, but surprisingly it holds up really well on the go. Unlike BOTW, the world is filled with meaningful quests which seem to give it a higher replay value. BOTW has it beat in terms of variety of environments though. These have to be the 2 best games of all time. Maybe Mass Effect 1 and KOTOR can be in the running too.
Great game! I loved it.
Man cool to see a thread of mine from 7 years ago bumped up

I replayed most of Witcher 3 and it was on the second time that I realized how much it SUCKS. In the first place it's predicated on finding someone else's kid. You walk around looking for someone who has seen someone who has talked to someone who know something about old Ciri. If that weren't tedious enough you look for Dandelion, who has five girlfriends. You know none of them know where he is but you can't skip asking every single one of them again. Geralt was most boring, laconic, and amoral character I've ever playing in a game. I won't play that again.

Interesting. For me, the game is more about the side content than the main story; sidequests are well written and there is so much to explore and do. I wouldn't call Geralt amoral, its just that he gets in to damed if he does damed if doesn't situations, with no right choice. Real life is a lot like that, so perhaps thats why it appeals to me. I find a lot of the quests humorous. I imagine the novigrad main questline will be a bit tedious for me, but hopefully I can break it up with sidequests or looking for the witcher gear sets or something. I think the main quest is like 30-40 of 100ish hours of gameplay. I like the overarching story of searching for Ciri though - she's Geralt's ward or adoptive daughter. Certainly he's more of a father to her than Emhyr who abandoned her and then conquered her homeland in the hopes of exploiting her powers (actually what he wanted to do is much worse) and when that didn't pan out (or his heart grew a size) only started searching for her when the political situation in his empire became unstable.
Half life 2. I'm in love with this game. Usually I hate FPS games, but there is something very special about this game. The atmosphere is just so unique. Although now I visit odds comparison golf more and more often.

zelda breath of the wild. Played it over the fall/early winter with my two kids (7&10). So much fun solving problems. Accidentally finished it. I wish we hadn't. It was fun to explore the world of Hyrule. Can't wait for sequel.
Red Dead Redemption 2
BOTW is still probably going to be most people's favorite, but Elden Ring should be a serious contender. Its like BOTW if it was actually hard. Its an open world minimalistic game that leaves much of the story, or in this case lore, up to the player's imagination. Also it doesn't have the annoying weapon breaking mechanic games like BOTW and witcher have and you can upgrade stuff, so you don't have to just toss it when its no longer viable if you really like it.
Like BOTW, you go through the world looking for fast travel points and mini dungeons, but while there are some that revolve around small puzzles, most of Elden Ring's mini dungeons are combat based.
There is coop and vs too in Elden Ring, which would have been really cool in Zelda - you know like maybe everyone could have created their own link. NPCs and summons can fight alongside you in Elden Ring as well.
The game has a few weaknesses, but most of the ones I can think of come down to personal preference. This will probably be my 2nd favorite game this year (behind xenoblade 3) and it will most likely win game of the year awards from various publications despite releasing early in the year.

Correct answer. Just played yesterday
how can you guys forget Super Mario for this thread? I was mad about it since school days.. such a simple gameplay that just requires spacebar clicking and yet delivers such thrill for a kid. I know a some people hate the game but at one time it officially sold most number of copies across the world.
Would have to say Goldeneye and then CS GO
Obviously it's gotta be Snake.
