you probably have patellar tendonitis.
solve by running in low-heeled shoes or barefoot on grass.

Ranannah,
Nice explanation...this might be what I'm missing. You're mentally MUCH stronger than me!
30 min easy today...legs still a little sore from the other day...what did everyone else do today?
registered my name, screwed up on the caps but oh well
Today was 12 miles at just under 6:30 pace. Didn't feel too hot tonight. The run was fine, felt good and whatnot, but I have a head ache now that I am done. I hope I am not coming down with something, I just got over being sick.
Last night, did 10mi @ 6:30 average with middle 5mi in 6min pace. Looking to do something other than easy pace or tempo pace so I chose something in the middle. Still feeling the effects from Tuesday's workout 3x(1600 in 5:20,800 in 2:30) 2:30 rest.
Quads constantly dead, they burn and feel like they're going to explode everytime I run (and right from the start). Other than that, everything else is feeling good. 6min pace was conversion pace and except for the quads, felt like I could run for an hour at that pace relatively easy.
Rabbanah, I meant to respond to your post about my Marathona and 5K goal from a while back but forgot. I ran my 5K PR 1month after my marathon PR so I think one can accomplish both things at the same time.
Zero miles today and only 2 in last six days because of wicked cold/flu symptoms. Hoping to get back out tomorrow.
50 minutes running easy and felt great!
8 mile tempo. Averaged 5:50 pace. Feeling ready to increase the workload, but I sorta want to wait for two weeks when I enter a different phase in the training.
Nice work rab.
40 minutes very easy...right foot hurting on top a bit.
15 today in just under 1:45. I feel beat and am looking forward to an easy day tomorrow. Good job to everyone who is hanging in there with this goal.
I got up today. Went out to rake leaves for 2 hours. Then I went to work from 12 to 5:00 and then I went and raked leaves again. Then it was dark so I went home and built a road-racing wheel for my friend, now I am going to go give it to him, along wtih some Tostitos corn chips. Then I will probably go spend some of the money I made raking leaves on a DVD, then I will go to bed.
Yesterday did 8 miles with a pretty decent negative split...still only ran 7 min pace but came back 4-5 minutes negative. This has been my longest run yet.
Today started week 3 and I did a pretty easy 4.5 miles in 31 minutes. I def picked it up on the second half of the run. Starting to get my legs back a little and run faster on the second half of runs. Lifted and did abs for about 30 mins after my run.
Today I got up and took my leaf blower in to be fixed. Then I put gas in my car and drove to work. I have been averaging 4.4 donuts a day since October, but I pick it up a little in the second half of the day.
I rented Season 1 of Becker and will probably do some stretching and watch that tonight.
That is awesome that you got to enjoy the changing colors of fall. Do you think you will be able to increase your workload anytime soon?
Tonight I got in a great run in the rain. 3 mile warm up and then 7 x mile in 5:30 with 3 minute rest. Finished off with a 2 mile cool down.
club, when you lift, what are you doing? I don't have access to a gym, but am interested in bettering my core.
Rab, nothing too serious...I hit the free weights for a bit- couple sets of curls, bench (do it once a week or so), lots of pullups-try to do those after every run and sometimes randomly throughout the day, pushups, dips, sometimes i add weight 15-20 while doing them, few other exercise like triceps-mostly things i used to do when i wrestled years and years back
as far as core goes i have a ways to go, but have had good programs in the past but i have always had trouble motivating myself to keep abs up-i just always have hated doing them
lately i have been doing planks-1 min per position 2x each (pushup position, and each side), then reg crunches as many as I can do in 30 secs, bicycles (as many in 30 sec), med ball situps if i have a partner to throw it to me (about 30 per set 2-3 sets), and some other random ones if I feel like doing somehting different.
I'm jumping on this thread a bit late but I have the same goal, and it's pretty inspirational seeing others out there trying to do the same.
PRs from College:
1500 - 4:16
5k - 15:55
Been away from serious running for over a year, tried making various come backs but failing. Got into cycling a bit, also gained a good amount of weight from cycling/beer/food. Riding up to 300mpw kept me in some sort of aerobic fitness I guess. I became pretty fast on the bike locally but lost interest in it recently.
Started the come back pretty seriously about 2 months ago. I'm now up to 75/80mpw while still putting in a bit over 100mpw on the bike from commuting to work and such. Haven't really done any strides or tempos although i will run at 6:30/40 pace once in a while when feeling fresh. Mostly it's been easy runs a bit over 7min pace. Most of the weight is gone but I could still drop 5 or 7lbs. I plan on incorporating some fartleks and tempo efforts next week.
The goal for now is to hold 80-90mpw for the next 12 weeks and hopefully be in 16:30 shape by April.
I'm giving myself 4 years to go sub 15. I've already realized that my social life is going to have to be pretty much non existent and it's going to take making the biggest sacrifices ever, yet I'm still excited to work for this arbitrary time goal!

Why will your social life have to be non existent? You can train hard and still go out with friends Friday and Saturday night. You may have to back off on the drinking a little, but that's OK. You can still have the crazy party nights here and there, you'll just have to suck it up and run the first few miles of your Sunday long run hungover. Oh well. Doesn't mean you have to give up having fun just to run 14:59.
Solo Runner,
If you have been hitting the same times on your X x mile workouts, try cutting the rests instead of changing the time. Cut the rest by 15 seconds every couple weeks until it is 60 seconds.
