Kenenisa Bekele’s Comeback Begins

He’s been on a 16-month hiatus.

Several years ago, the track world couldn’t stop talking about the great Ethiopian distance runner, Kenenisa Bekele. After all, he had broken multiple world records and snatched three Olympic gold medals in his relatively short career.

However, after the Great Edinburgh Cross-Country meet in January, 2010, Bekele seemed to have vanished. In that race, held in snowy conditions, Bekele could only muster a fourth-place showing.

What Bekele was struggling with was a nagging calf injury that got worse. For seven months he couldn’t even run a step. He avoided surgery and has been in rehab since.

“The calf muscle was injured. The muscles were strained badly and it was very difficult to try an operation,” he told Running Times. “I didn’t do this. But the recovery was long and then the treatment also. I tried to run on it, and everything is good now.”

He now says he’s ready to race in two months.

“Now my training after such a long injury, it is good,” he says. “I am running 9 or 10 miles a day now. I am doing my base training now, background training. Once a day, I run. After one month I will start speed work and I will see about it.”

Yeah Kenny B's back but do you know how many 10000m races he's won 12 for 12. That means if he runs in August he will be going for unlucky number 13! Do I smell the greatest upset in distance running ever?

Hmm, the Hermans article says he's been training 5 months? Yikes, if he has 2 months to sharpen up then no one else will stand a chance in Daegu.

Don't be surprised if he doesn't run because of 'injury'. There is a rumour he won't run this year because of a two yr situation. Just a rumour.....well we see soon enough; will be interested if Hermens is talking in coming months of a 'setback in training rulling him out of Daegu'.

I certainly wouldn't be surprised at all if he doesn't run in the Worlds. It's very strange that Hermans should come out now and say he will "definitely" be there in Daegu, when Bekele hasn't run a race for 18 months due to injury!

I sense a smokescreen too.

It wasn't odd that he would run the World Championships as a defending Champion. Anything could happen in a Championship race and that's what Kenenisa was hoping for as he knew he was close to getting back fit.

12 straight wins in the 10000m comes to an end or do you consider the DNF in Daegu as a defeat? The 10000m men now have to go back to scratching their heads after Bekele rebounded two weeks later after his DNF with a world leading 26:42 and if he can stay healthy he will be much faster in 2012!

the rebound makes it painfully obvious that he is a doper.

Personally, although Bekele cannot count this DNF as a win, he can still say that he was undefeated because technically nobody defeated him.
