Ok then, you have no arguement from me. I personally don't like anything over olympic distance myself. The time/training for the swim and bike is too rediculous hard as it is.

TRIATHLETES ARE A JOKE
I have done both, did tri's first then specialised in running, if I trained for tri's as hard as i now do for running I would fully expect to have been to a world champs be in the top 10 in the nation, and possibly have an age group world title.... in contrast there's no way I have acheived any of that in running yet. Thats why runners resent triatheletes, they do a sport which is easier to be successful at yet attract more sponsorship and more TV coverage....and it sucks! Running just isn't glamorous anymore.
Running is for 110 pound runts. If you are small and feminine you will not make it as a football player, baseball player, or even as a swimmer or biker. Those sports require too much strength, which you little runners don't have. So stick to running and talk shit on forums and only forums. If you start getting brash and saying these things to the face of real men, which you are not, you will up not only beaten, but possibly also unable to ever run/walk again.
Why do they not train properly for the 1500m? If they could run a sub 4min 1500 at the end of the competition, they would surely get enough points to turn over almost any lead?
Also, why bother with Pole Vault? Its a pointless event at best, let alone as part of a darned triathlon! I hate seeing guys no heights straight after putting in an awesome swim time!
I would rather see them run a 10k instead of the discus too...i mean, discus....wtf? If i wanted to hurl my mothers best dishes into the outfield then i would do. Mind you, she can kick my ass, so bad idea.
It would be interesting to see the high jump replaced by the steeplechase too, lots of jumping and still a soft landing too, but better tv for the fans.
couldnt eat a whole one

I was fortunate enough to coach Josiah Middaugh...one of the top XTerra guys in the world. He was one of the toughest kids ever...and also one of the nicest.
i think xterra is not really triathlon since the swim don't really matter too much.
Are runners really athlete's? They are fit.... But where is the coordination. Runner's just put one foot ahead of the next.
Where Illiteracy Thrives.
this is a joke, runners, swimmers, bikers, yall all suck ass. Rollerblading? now thats a sport...
I just can't believe all the crap floating around this thread. Where is the respect? Runners, bikers, swimmers, any combination of the three, whatever. Respect the fact that they go out and do what they do. I think it is important for all the endurance sports, especially olympic sports, to keep good fellowship so we can all form a bigger sporting community. If you think you're such a badass, go race against someone like Steve Duplinsky or Dave Thompson. The transition to bike and swim is not a piece of cake for everyone, so just because you just went sub 16 or 17 in a 5k doesn't mean you have all the skills. There are plenty of legit runners who made the switch to triathlon, or guys who never ran at all who can turn in a legit 5k. Some people just might not have the typical speedwork someone on a team may have, but most have large bases. You have hyped yourselves up too much. Yeah, there are a ton of age groupers and fatties out there doing triathlons, but I would rather see people like that racing instead of sitting on a sofa with a bag of potato chips. Agreed?
Agreed, and well put.
Who cares what the people on this site think about triathletes? I ran at a top collegiate level, but after college, I found tri's and du's were a welcome reprieve from running day in and day out. I still run 4 times a week or more and I will always identify myself as a runner first and a triathlete second.
Watch out Letsrun message board hierarchy, there are more people like me out there than you'd like to believe.

Nope!

That's bull! There's more money in triathlon and you come away with a rockin' body, not some scrawny stick figure.
Bahhhhhhh!!!

well for your information, during this time i was a 14:26 5k runner, a category 1 cyclist, and could swim a mile in 18:34..but whatever. i competed in some top level tri's and did very well. i was just stating in the longer ones it just got to the point where i felt like i was just trying to finish.
I will never, ever, do any athletic endeavour just to finish. I am competitive in any 1/2 marathon, marathon, and 1/2 Iron I have done, but I'll try a full IronMan just to finish...once.
Those things seem like total soul suckers. Oly and an occasional 1/2 will be ok with me.
