I knew a bunch of people there too, not in college, they didn't run in college either. Almost all of them knew who Lincoln was. It is Arkansas. Go Hogs.

Accidentally was the ringer at a road race somewhere near Knoxville TN back during the summer of 1995. Was living at UT that summer and did a local 5k as a fitness test, so I just bandited it. Ended up winning, running around the chute at the end and waited around long enough to let the guy who was behind me (who thought he got 2nd) know he won...
Back in 1991--just before heading off to med school I entered a 5k in some hick town outside of syracuse. I hadnt run much over the summer as it was nice to be done with college and competitive running. I took 3rd in this race in 17 min....with 2nd place a few steps ahead of me. The winner by 2+ minutes was you guessed it...jerry lawson.

At the Hennepin Lake 5k, in 1991, Bob Kempainen showed up and ran a 14:41; I didn't know who he was at the time; there is a photo of me standing in front of him at the start. Yes, I actually lined up in front of him.

at a local 4 mile trail race (at the most 200 peoople entered) in marin county about 5 or 6 years ago suzy favor hamilton showed up and won the thing (mens and womens).. she was close to the course record
A friend of mine showed up to a 4th of July 5K about 3 years ago and was blown away by some mom pushing a jogging stroller. His words were "She passed me like I was standing still." Turns out it was Jenny Spangler. She had to start in back of the pack because of the stoller. She won the race.

He showed up at a lowkey handicap race held at
Larry Olsen's old running shoe store in Millis some years back.

Big showing at a local 5km here in Windsor, Ontario in '99. It was before Ryan McKenzie was running in the 13's obviously as well. (8th, 2 seconds ahead of Sully's wife)
I ran a 10k in Memphis in 1990. I placed second in 32 minutes. 2 minutes behind Craig Virgin a surprise enterant.

HOOTIE 2.0 is now history, having taken place
last Sunday evening, just less
than two hours after the 1500 meter finals.
This year\'s running was marred
by records in most \"divisions\". This year\'s
wiener, Buck Jones eclipsed the
14:59 standard set in Eugene last year by
2000 runner-up, Jamey Harris.
Buck, seen quaffing a malt beverage within a
half hour of the start, waltzed
to a 14:52 time, some 18 seconds up on Harris.
Just 37 seconds later, our next buck came rolling in...this
one was (swear
to god) buck nekid and hails from buck-nell university.
Our final buck, and
this year\'s HOOTIE HONOREE (an award reserved for the
athlete who most
closely exemplifies all that hootie stands for) was
none other than Eddy
HellyBUECK. Eddy not only consumed at least one
sixteen ounce beverage in
the final minutes prior to the start, but the guy
scarfed down an entire
serving of super nachos and then high tailed it
over the 3.1 miles in a pair
of gray leather boat shoes!!
For his efforts, Mr. H earned a highly
coveted plaque (perpetual) from the
1962 US vs Poland Dual meet...this particular
\"collector\'s item\" was
originally awarded for 1st place in the
1600 meter relay (and purchased on
e-bay by a particular member of the Hootie
committee who will go unnamed).
2.0 was run as an out and back along the
bike path which parallels the great
American River. In total, 143 \"runners\"
toed the line...50 more than in last
year\'s inaugural event. The running of HOOTIE 3.0
will take place in
conjunction with next June\'s USATF National
Track & Field Championships in
Eugene.

What about George Young...when he dropped off after Pre came about he used to kick some ass at the local races.
I was an embarrassed ringer in a race back in the 80's. I should have known something was up because it was a midweek race in the afternoon. But it was advertised in the paper! Anyway I get to the race and it is all junior high kids except for myself and one other adult. I had a 50 yard lead after the first 400 and the lead kept getting bigger as the race went on. I was kind of running along thinking "what am I doing here?" when a car pulls up beside me from the local TV station and starts to interview me mid-race. I wanted to disappear but figured I might as well finish the race. I even stayed around for the awards. Definitely one of the more embarrassing running events in my life.
In about 1988 Anne Hannam from NZ did pretty well on the US Road Race circuit getting down to about 31:30 for 10k. On her return home she turned up for a 10k Fun Run (i.e. no prize money) in Auckland with a few hundred others and won the event - men included - in about 32 minutes. I remember my neighbour was a sub 4 minute 1500 runner and he ended up 3rd or 4th. He couldn't keep up.
A month or two later a group of us finished a run from our local clubrooms at the local track. Anne Hannam was burning round the track doing a 5k time trial in her first ever track attempt. Did about 16 flat. Pretty impressive. She was one very gutsy runner. Unfortunately had a lot of injuries in later years.
