Maybe 4 qualified in 3200 but the 4th guy not in 1600 so coach picks him because the 3rd guy runs 1600. Bottom line is that the blue standard merely confuses most people because they think it is required in order to qualify and they assume it is a guarantee.
Blue standard. It is a marketing gimmick that confuses most athletes and fans. And people need to read the fine print regarding 3 athletes per team. Imagine being on an elite team that has 3 kids hit the standard one week and Mike Jay tweets that those 3 are guaranteed. The next week, a teammate hits the standard and now one of the 1st three are out. The standards have been so far off the past few years, that more than 21 hit the standard. They should drop the silly gimmick.
So who gets to go? Don’t really understand you scenario. Doesn’t they way they do it get the fastest kids in the race?
Just have the 21 fastest at the deadline for the 1600 and 3200 qualify. This is how it was done until recently.
Did Zuber have a stress fracture last fall? Good to see he was back racing this weekend.
Yes I believe he did at nxr, was in a boot according to some people
Yes, rumor was around 2 mile mark at NXR coming down a bunny hill he absolutely rolled his ankle, bad enough might have caused a borderline stress fracture to change to one. He was in a boot after NXR. About the same time Merrick quit running as well. So they should be on the same recovery process or close to it.

It’s really unfortunate for both of them, wish Merrick would not have had his stress fracture at state. Hopefully both ready for 3200 this year at Drake and state!

3200 will be very strong this year, especially drake. Zuber, Nauman, Dunham, Merrick, Anania, Decker, possibly a good showing from ten pas, who by the way ran 4:09 at NW missouri state. Surprised nobody has talked about that yet. He went out fast, trailing Juan Gonzalez, and held on for a 4:09. Juan kicked for the win in 4:04. Very impressive for february.
The boys distance side is the deepest it has ever been. A D1 level commit could end up 6th at drake and still run a sub 9.
You forgot the Dowling boys. I agree that the state looks good, especially the junior class. But relativity is what matters, not times. Guys like Pollard, Schweizer, Evans, and Heidesch were top 10 nationally. And we have had footlocker and NXN individual qualifiers. Shoes have dropped times by 10 seconds in the 3200 and 5 seconds in the 1600. It isn't just Iowa. National HS times have dropped, NCAA times have dropped, and world class times have dropped by about that amount. I don't know that our boys will rank higher than previous Iowa classes did. I hope they do. There have been D1 guys who didn't finish top 10 at Drake in the past.
Yes the Dowling boys are running very well already and they have elite coaching. As was mentioned, shoes have reset times. Let's see where the Iowa athletes rank nationally. There will be close to 100 boys breaking 9:00. Obviously, Ferebee proved that she is national class but she did not run fast indoor this year. Have to expect sub 9:30 for her.
The distance events at Drake may be determined by who did the best job recovering over the winter. Many of the top runners were injured, both boys and girls.
