jakob had the 5000 won after the ethiopeans tactics blew up in their faces so hard in the 10000. with that result, they weren't going to go out and try the same thing again, and it became every man for himself.
you can call the 5000 watered down, but jakob destroyed the no.2 fastest runner of all-time, who put in a legitimate effort from 600 out to gap the field.
it was only watered down in the fact that Yomif wasn't there. nobody else mattered.
It’s fair but what in Gods name is Gebrhiwet doing? His 200 splits were 26.4/27.7/27.9. It’s one thing if Graham Blanks does this at NCAAs, but Hagos has run a lot of races. A 26.4 gets him no worse than bronze if he doesn’t panic and kill his own finish.
Basically the same reason why anybody believes Jakob can run faster than 12:48, in other words.
I wouldn't be surprised if Kerr could run 12:48 in that shape if he specifically targeted a fast 5000. But he's not as suited to the event as Jakob, and says as much himself, so your reasoning isn't 1-1 there.
See Nuguse, who was not far behind Kerr at 3k indoors and in mile WR shape, he still struggled in his first serious 5000 and was beaten running 13:02.

I dont think its brilliant tactics. I think its more that many of the guys in the 5000 meter final ran way below par. If the final had been run and won in 12.35 jakob wouldnt have even gotten a medal.
What makes you think those guys can run 12:35 after rounds and with no pacers? No Cheptegei, Kiplimo or Kejelcha means no one besides Gebriwhet is capable or willing to do team tactics and share the lead at that pace.
Even if the Ethiopians tried something like that, we saw how it turned out in the 10,000. The leaders wouldn't medal and Jakob would just sit back in the chase pack like Cheptegei did, letting them kill themselves with a suicidal pace before cleaning up.

Because he's an arrogant mfer who seriously thought he could crush everyone from the front.
I don’t agree, but maybe “borderline arrogant” could be a label here, because out running such a talented field from the front is a huge task, and had to be executed by nearly perfection if anywhere near a possible success…
Every strategy is risky. But if Jakob thought he was in 3.25 high shape, and the others in 3.27 high (that might have been correct) front running might have been the least risky way…
Execution: Extremely important not to run the first lap too fast, for a number of reasons, e.g not making an out strung field where his competitors immediately find their positions without fights and wide bends and stop restart strides and awkwardly rhythm and pace, but also of course because of the danger of running oneself into too early lactate…
I don’t know if arrogance is the right word -Jakob knows a lot about his own weaknesses and restrictions, and how important rhythm and the right pace are in his races. But in this race he didn’t listen good enough to his own body, or to be more exact: He paradoxically listened too much to his body (his extremely good legs, and therefore skipped his plan of running a 1.5 sec slower first lap) so he got fouled and over estimated himself! Arrogance? No! Good learning? Yes!
His worst tactical mistake was letting Hocker come inside him at the finish. You don’t lead the race just to let someone come inside.
I’m pretty sure knowing the outcome Jakob would have done the same over again! -He wouldn’t been human if he didn’t prefer Hocker winning over Kerr… And he himself couldn’t have gotten better than a fourth placing with the too fast opening, IMO, anyway. And I really like that the guy with the most left in the tank won…

Yes darling Noah, you know I agree with you when I greet you as darling!!!!!!!!!!!!
Geb is as clueless a runner as they come by, totally dumb af!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Geb usually goes from 400m out in all his DL races, when he ran 12:36 he kicked with 400m to go or at least 440m. But somehow he chose to kick from 650 meters in Paris, and while not understanding the cumulative effect of anthropogenic RF on his high performance in Paris is one thing, his poor tactics was very alarming for such an experienced athlete!!!

Oh really huh???? So you cut some slack for Jakob is the 1500m by crying about how he should have won leading wire to wire if only he ran the 1st lap 55.8s while leading????????
And you don't cut the same slack for Geb and the Ethiopians and instead deny that they would still win even if they ran from the front wire to wire and led the whole race at a fast pace?????
Look sir, stop your double standards alright!!!!! I'm sick and tired of all these nonsense that pampers Jakob's front racing tactics and still win but not pamper the Ethiopians front running tactics and still win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You folks need to wake up to your Jakob fixation alright???????? He can't even sprint properly with such terrible biomechanical movement patterns!!!!!
The leaders wouldn't medal and Jakob would just sit back in the chase pack like Cheptegei did, letting them kill themselves with a suicidal pace before cleaning up.
Precisely sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jakob also wouldn't gold medal forever in the 1500m as Kerr, doper Hocker, doper Nuguse would just sit back in the chase pack like Cheptegei did in the 5k and 10k, letting them kill themselves with a suicidal pace before cleaning up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's it sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jakob is done and over with in the 1500m!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nah, the 2023 Budapest and 2022 Eugene also went out in the 56-57 second range, which is 1.5s slower than 54.8 in Paris, and look what happened both times?????? Jakob lost SUBMISSIVELY without a fight to my British strongmen Wightman and KERR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's like Jakob just tapped out in a choke submission lol, he didn't even collapse on the ground and be rushed to the hospital with a heart attack or something like that, something to show us he fought TILL HIS DEATH like a warrior, you feeling me sir??????
In Paris, it was the same thing, Jakob finished looking strong and walking around like he should have sacrificed more of his life on the line for the spectators to see.

I think Jakob lost to Wightman in 2022 because the latter ran very fast and well disposed in that race (and Jakob didn’t have his best season in the 1500m that year). In 2023 Jakob was hugely superior to Kerr, but lost because of sickness.
In OG I think both Josh and Jakob went out too fast with the latter as the largest loser because of the combined cost of early lactate and “breaking the wind» (meaning poorly executed tactics, which he explained very convincingly in his post race interviews). Fun race! And the lack of desperation in Jakob during the home straight was just him acknowledging and taking the consequences of screwing up his judgement. -Which sometimes happens with the brave! -He will come back, and impress us with his superior, flawless stride and finishing speed..!

It's not tactics. In the 1500 he faces guys faster than him - guys who would beat him in an 800. In the 5000 he's the fastest - he's beat them all in an 800.
He wins so many 1500 grand prix races cos the fastest guys usually aren't there.
It is to Jakob's immense credit that he turns out to run so often

yes. that was a huge problem, but he's going for gold, not bronze. Jakob was boxed quite well, so his best bet was to wait longer, perhaps til 300 or 400 to go, and then hope Jakob didn't have enough time to get out of the box. 600 meters gave him far too much time to break out, and also killed himself.
On the other hand, it's hard to say at what point Jakob would have taken into his own hands, regardless of the competition, and i don't think he was losing to any kind of kick within last 800 meters on that day.
It was a mistake, but any strategy might have been, and These guys are afraid to press for 3000 or even 2000 meters. So it will always be like this.

To be clear, his strategy was sound. Cheptegei has done his move at 500 and gotten the gap. It’s a good idea though adding the extra 100 to it, ups the difficulty level. If you go at 400, there is no element of surprise. It’s the energy management with these Ethiopians. And it’s especially in these championship finals. Grant Fishers coach Scannell discussed it in depth and noted that the scouting report for these guys is their last 10 seconds or 80 meters is a huge weakness. That’s why Krop/Grijalva way outperformed until this year. But Gebrhiwet has finished well in plenty of races, but you can tell he was emotional and panicky as soon as he hit the front. If he’d just slowly upped the tempo he probably doesn’t win but he has a real chance with a nice head start on Jakob.
i agree a medal should have easily been his. if A medal is what he wanted. If gold is all he cared for, like Jakob in the 1500, then he had to do something extraordinary.
With the strategy he used, I have to wonder what kind of 1500 shape Hagos felt he was in. though maybe it wasn't strategy. It was just uncontrolled adrenaline like Jakob's first lap of the 1500.
