Look, I'm not gonna say she's not doping, there's probably at least a 50 percent chance she is. But is it really so impossible to believe that she's a mega-talent who was just in the wrong event at first? We all know runners who would've been better off at longer distances but resisted moving up. I can imagine Assefa not being all-in on running in the first part of her career, but still running 1:59 off pure talent. With added maturity and focus, a massive breakthrough would be expected.
Two things I firmly believe regardless of whether Assefa is clean or not:
-The performance gap between men and women narrows at longer distances. Given a man and woman of equal 5k/10k speed, the woman should be expected to run a faster marathon.
-Women's distance running in general remains underdeveloped in terms of depth, and most records have a lot more room to fall still. East African women being able to fully participate in athletics is still a fairly recent development.
Lastly, if I believed that every record breaking performance had to be the result of doping, I simply wouldn't follow the sport at the pro level. If you think that way, why are you here?
