Jakob is great. One of the best of all time. He should continue to do big things including winning gold medals and breaking WRs.
But.
FFS. This discussion in this thread has gotten a little silly.
Keep in mind that: These records have stood for 27 (3K) and 24 years (Mile) for good reasons. Now, after all this time, one guy's gonna break both less than 24 hours apart? These are 2 legendary WRs set by legendary athletes (and yes, almost 100%—dopers). As fanboys of Jakob, you seem just as arrogant as he is, despite his recent WCs loss in the 1500m. Maybe he had a sniffle, IDK. He looked healthy and confident (ahem) in his abilities in the semis and great in the 5000m. He, and you, should just accept that he's still 22 (plenty of time to improve tactically), raced poorly, and got beat by a better racer on the day. It happens (see previous year for example). His youth showed as he was almost pouting and clearly feeling sorry for himself before he crossed the line (and also got beat by his countryman, too). I try to give him a pass on the cockiness as he's still pretty young. But crap, he makes it difficult. So far, his outdoor records have been world bests. The 1500m, mile, 3000m, and 5000m have to be the bigger goals for him. Any/all of them are within his reach at some point (even considering that he's not close at 5000m yet). 2 of them in the same weekend? The only way he'll possibly do that is in the Mile if passes through 1500 en route below 3:26. Based on his PR and fitness, that's not out of the question if everything (pacing, weather, etc.) fall into place. If you've been around the sport, you've surely watched hyped-up WR attempts that fall short. Plenty of times, it's because the athletes were never seriously attempting the WRs! But ya gotta sell tix and put butts in seats. Double WR attempt in mid-D races? There would be a fraction of you that would believe he had a shot at the 800 WR, too, as part of a triple. One caveat to the entire discussion: Any record he breaks in the near future or later on (along with others) will be in part due to the shoes they're racing in. There should be no argument in this matter at this point, other than just how big of a role they play. So compare all you want to Komen & El Guerrouj, but he'd need to take more than a tenth off those times to say his performance was superior.
Again, great runner who has done and will do great things. And his cockiness and character is needed in the sport! But I'm trying to be the voice of reason here. Relax.

But what times do you predict he will run? You also did see that he ran a 2k WR, yes?
If there is electronic timing set up at 1500 m. in a mile race and Jakob goes through 1500 m. faster than 3:26.00, would he officially get 2 WRs in one race? If he beats the 3 km. record as well then he could get 3 WRs in a weekend.
Just trying to foment discussion here. I'm honestly curious about whether FAT is setup at 1500 m. in a mile race if the 1500 time would count for WR purposes.

This is like Jakob hater bingo right here. We've got it all (SNL Stefon voice):
'Cocky', 'arrogant,' 'beat at worlds,' 'asterisk due to super shoes,' + straight up lying about his credentials ('got beat by his countryman' [at worlds])

He needs to improve the world record by a tenth, as in 10%, because of the shoes?! There is no way a shoe can make you 10% faster. Get out of here, Jakob is amazing and it’s not the shoes.
Yep, I'm a hater. Ignore that I: Said he's one of the greatest of all time and has and will break WRs. Gave him somewhat of a pass due to his age (and that we need people to be boastful characters in our sport). Said "any/all of them are within his reach at some point" (despite being well off at 5K so far) Actually said he could break the Mile record this weekend!
I'm trying to get you all to stop the circlejerk for half a second and have some common sense of history and logic.
And I know it's hard for you to handle, but yes, the shoes make a difference. Like it or not, it's a key reason that names like Komen and El Guerrouj are being discussed.
If they ran the mile and 3000 back to back, starting the 3000 exactly when the winner of the mile crossed the finish line, Jakob could still win them both.
I don't know nearly enough to predict. Guess? Sure.
MILE: 3:44.52 FTW. And why not—Nuguse in 2nd in an AR of 3:46.1.
3K: I really don't know at this point. The weather is not promising for a double of this nature. How hot will it be during the 3K? How long will the pacers take him? Will he even line up? How hard will he run the day before (less than 24 hours earlier)? I don't think his 3K competition looks up to the task of competing against him.
Yes, I saw the 2K and, believe it or not, was excited to watch it and see him set the new mark! I mentioned that so far his outdoor records (2M, 2K) are "world bests." Seldom-run events. That aspect shouldn't take away that they're the fastest of all time (not necessarily the best of all time, but that's always a fun discussion). He's the fastest ever at those distances.
If they ran the mile and 3000 back to back, starting the 3000 exactly when the winner of the mile crossed the finish line, Jakob could still win them both.
I know you don’t believe that but that is how stupid some of his fanboys sound. You’re too smart about Jakob to believe this.
I wrote: "...but he'd need to take more than a tenth off those times to say his performance was superior."
A tenth is a fraction. You have to specify a fraction of what. You didn't say a tenth of a second. And since that's insignificant anyway, I assumed you meant a tenth of the current world record. Now you know about leaving things to ambiguity.
If World Cross and the Boston Marathon were on the same morning in the same country (why not throw him a bone), Jakob would win both...and it wouldn't be close.
Sure, you're amazing with reading and word stuff. You win.
The point was that a new WR would have to be significantly faster than the current record for it to better. Not a tenth of a second to be better. Significantly faster. Those wiser than me can chime in re: what the new shoes are worth. Certainly much more than a TENTH OF A SECOND for the Mile.
