kid on my team says he ran a 9:35 two mile in highschool, but that 9:35 was a 10:35 in a dual meet and it was a typo in the newspaper. He also habitually lies in the coach's book about interval times. In his defense though he has run 9:37 in the two mile in HS and I know because I was in the same race.

it really does take atleast a 4:10-4:13 to qualify for state here, unless its a slower year or region, then 4:15 would probably have a chance.

In the kid's defense, maybe he has made more than a one or two minute improvement in his 5K since being 12.

wow, I am shocked at the hate or disrespect toward Max Harn that is being spewed, whoever it is stemming from. he is a solid guy, a very good runner and certainly deserves none of this disrespect. having lived in Madison and known people who have trained with Max, he has been very helpful to others with their training and such. one thing he definitely is not is full of crap or boastful about his PRs (which I'd love to be able to say mine are near, but in reality, aren't even close).
I had a kid in basic training for the air force last winter tell everybody in our flight and including our TI that he ran a 9.5 100 meter dash. Of course I called bs on it and he tried to defend it but finally one day the TI looked up the world record in the 100 and figured out he was lying and made his life a living hell, he got called into the snake pit every day when we ate and all the TI's would just tear him apart. It was so funny.

lindgren is one of the biggest liars in the sport, and mentally unstable to boot. If he's lying like this about his times, should we question whether he REALLY ran 300 mile weeks (or whatever outrageous claims he makes).
Sure, he ran some fast times, but maybe 140 mile weeks are being claimed as 240 mile weeks, for example.
A man once told me that he ran a mile in 3:30 and he was loafing, I soon later found out that he was lying, he actually ran 3:28 that man was Jason Rexing.
I had a guy at work tell me that he ran a 100 in 10.6, a 400 in 47 seconds, and a 800 in 1:47....in high school and didn't run in college. Also on a side note, I know how many people enjoy the red-headed step child of letsrun Brandon Moen. Look at his website there is a crap load of lies there. Bet you can't find more than two statements true.
How about lying severely to get into the fast heat of a big invite like these high school kids did at Kansas Relays this year. The first times are their seed times for the fast heat of the college 1500m. Clay Mayes didn't even run, the other Adams twin Ryan ran with his bib. It's one thing to fudge by a couple seconds to get into a faster heat, but these kids ran close to PRs and still got smoked in the race and kept a couple legit college runners from being able to race in the fast section in front of 25,000 people.

Irv Ray claims he ran 4:02 mile and a 1:50 800. Yeah right.
When I was just starting out in Junior College, we had this little dude from somewhere in the carribean come out for the team. He had been in the Marines and claimed to have been on the Marine Corps Track team. He was regaling us with stories about running the 800 in the Millrose games against Johnny Gray and all this crap. Said his PR was 1:47. He looked pretty tough and nobody really doubted him
At our first meet the guy wasn't cleared to run yet, so he was there in street clothes. Some of the mid distance guys were saying they wished he could just jump on the track and rabbit them through in 2:10 for the first 800 of the 15, just to keep the pace honest. He was like, "oh yeah mon, I'd bring you through in 2:10 no proooblem mon". Well, 2 weeks later, he ran his first meet and got last in the slowest of 3 heats of the 800 in 2:20. We didn't see much of him after that.
I have a different perspective on this topic. There was a stocky, overweight guy in my office who claimed to have run "about 4:15" for the mile when he was in high school. The guy didn't remember anything about his training, he didn't seem to know much about running, and he looked like he couldn't have ever broken 8:15 for the mile, let alone 4:15.
It turns out the guy graduated from a local high school. I found the high school's web site and looked up their all-time track list. It turns out that this guy ran 4:11.6 for the full mile back in 1979. He still holds the frickin' school record.
Sometimes, people who appear to be lying are actually telling the truth. In my case, the suspected liar was actually selling himself short by four seconds.
This one time I was at a big party with some runners down in Arkansas after indoor nationals. I'm a 4:30 miler without a lot of speed and the competition was looking bad that night. I figured to get a chance I would have to either P.R. or "P.R." Needless to say I managed to run sub 4 that night but wasen't able to go to nationals because of a stress fracture that had put me out most of the season. She bought it though and diched the real sub 4 miler. Hahah, sucker.
I also boned her.
Well, I diden't bone her but it would have been a good story right?
In fact everything I said is a lie.
I had a kid in my school run around 19:10 for 5K this year, his Mile PR is something like 5:20. He was our #10 guy for XC. I often have his friends ask me if hes the best runner in the school like he boasts. He also wears nothing but saucony and wears Saucony shirts all of the time. He now tells people that hes sponsored by them. Sometimes, I just dont know what to say to this kid...
One of my clients was talking to me about running and mentioned that when he was in the marines, they used to average 4:15 miles over 5 miles wearing combat boots and a 70lbs pack.
Now, I don't know exactly how much time the boots and extra weight would add, but I have to believe that he could a sub-3:00 in flats and sans pack. This means that Alan Webb is not the best U.S. miler ever!
I once had a coach that used to tell us how "back in the day" the guys at this engineering school he went to had to fight for their varsity spot in practice - to get a spot on the bus for the saturday race...
My personal fav. was the story of how he and the capt. duked it out during his freshman year... They ran 12mi in 60min during a practice the week of an invitational... And with the enthusiasm he tells it- there was no doubt they were running on another level that day -just pushing each other... But he didn't back down because it was the capt.
