Yes, they have lost many men and a lot of equipment. But this setback may result in a stronger Russian military. It all depends, of course, on how the people in current and future leadership positions within Russia react.
Getting your ass kicked, gaining real world experience against western weapons systems, having massive holes in your own design, production, strategic and operational military affairs exposed MAY result in a large-scale increase in Russian military capabilities a few years down the road.
Many things are possible, but it's hard to see how current Russian leadership turns this around.
I've said from the beginning, and still believe, that the war is a distraction from the utter failure of leadership to capitalize on the economic hand they've been dealt including abundant resources and a well educated populace. The leadership is the top of a rotting kleptocracy just trying to hang on to power with little regard for the citizenry.
Western weapons systems, while they've been a problem, aren't "the problem". The initial Russian invasion fiasco was largely against Ukrainian defenders using Soviet era weapons systems.
Even if their were leadership that could turn the country around, they don't, by themselves have the economic power to build a formidable conventional military.
Not really disagreeing with any of the above, but 2 (unfortunate) thoughts come to mind:
1) I’m no historian, but pretty sure that rotting dictatorships have still managed, here and there, to have fairly capable militaries.
2) Probably more important, even if they suck, if they’re big enough, they can still cause a LOT of pain. Ask Ukraine, unfortunately.

Guaranteed that US and NATO planners are certainly NOT assuming that they’ve gained NOTHING. They are, rightfully, worrying about what they MIGHT have learned.

And let’s go ahead and be more concrete about it, thus far. WHAT indication is there that the world’s widespread condemnation of the war (and sanctions, and legal investigations/actions, etc.) has restrained Putin’s (conventional) aggression one iota?

Sure seems like Russia has regrouped substantially. I kept seeing articles about how Russia was going to run out of long range missiles, but they keep sending bigger waves of them. The russian economy may be rough, but the parts that are functioning are building lots and lots of weapons. I'm 1000% pro-ukraine, and at the moment I don't see them winning the war. What I see are ukrainians fleeing the country because russia is commiting war crime after war crime. I think to win this war, or survive, ukraine needs a few thousand M-1 abrams tanks and potentially even a peace deal. Russia's military may be pathetic, but it's just big. It can replace losses much faster than Ukraine's can. With M-1's though, the ukrainians might be able to take back their country. Most of the sweeping counterattacks earlier this year were with older ukrainian tanks and they did great. M-1s would be gods on the battlefield.

1) Yes, we heard from week 2 that Russias economy will collapse due to sanctions, that Putin will be killed or overthrown, that the army has lost complete morale, that the military is on its last legs, has no ammo, no men, has poor tactics....etc etc. Since WEEK 2!! Nearly everything you said here is wrong. Russia's best were all massacred on the opening days of the war. Did you type this with a C**K in your mouth?
