That sounds close until you consider that humans share 98.8% DNA with chimps and 96% with other apes. In other words, 96% is a LONG way from the closest natural coronavirus to SARS-CoV-2.

1) Viruses mutate a LOT faster than mammals. The Chimp-human similarity statistic and (and any cross-species similarity stat for complex organisms) is misleading, the 99% is based on alignment of shared genes. Our knowledge of functional genetics has progressed A LOT since then. (see: )
2) There are CGG codons show up in many related viruses. The specific furin cleavage site shows up in other viruses too.
just google "CGG codon SARS-CoV-2" and you'll there are many descriptive papers published on these ideas. No one takes the conclusion "it might be engineered." (Except the people trying to sell you substack subscriptions)
