How much did the US give Afghanistan to defeat the USSR? That defeat brought about the downfall of USSR. That was money well spent!
Now, a similar situation is playing out here. Russians are slow learners apparently.
When Russia fails to fulfill any of its objectives in Ukraine, and actually creates the exact opposite circumstances of its goals, the Putin regimen will not survive.
The new government will hopefully be more democratic, perhaps a female leader elected to bring Russia forward this century.

Unfortunately, the smart money is pretty much never on established (and often belligerent) autocracies to fall anytime soon. Currently, see N. Korea, Iran, Russia, China, Cuba, etc. Recently, see USSR, Iraq, Libya, etc., etc., etc.
