jaysus, portugal, spain and greece weren't really democracies either in recent times - but they got better at it.

you have to start somewhere. Ukraine is starting somewhere. And that's why Putin felt he had to destroy it.

No one imagines that Ukraine is some "shining example of Democracy".

The reality is that Ukraine is a historically corrupt and fragile democracy moving toward western democratic ideals. That is preferable to being absorbed into the ever more autocratic kleptocracy that is Russia.

It's entirely possible that Russia emerges as a better version of itself when this is all over.

I agree. This disaster will help Russia ultimately, but the current generation won’t see much good from Russia during their lifetime.
