No one imagines that Ukraine is some "shining example of Democracy".
The reality is that Ukraine is a historically corrupt and fragile democracy moving toward western democratic ideals. That is preferable to being absorbed into the ever more autocratic kleptocracy that is Russia.
It's entirely possible that Russia emerges as a better version of itself when this is all over.
