If all teachers were 100% ready to go back in person in Fall 2020 - it would have happened, there were multiple forces at play. Governments, teachers, and parents all kinda dropped the ball on getting kids back in school; not unexpected, but I hope there is a more unified response next time around.

As I said, I have a relative who is a teacher. There were plenty of parents that pushed back heavily against reopening deep into 2021. There no confidence in the institutions.

We'll have to do the same next time too, only next time schools might turn out to be a more significant vector and closing them might be the right call.

Yeah agreed. Obviously in hindsight lots of stupid things were done... makes me think we should be more agressively testing our institutions for disruptions in future. So we can have a little more pre-hindsight next time.

In the first month or two of vaccine rollout, West Virginia was consistently the most vaccinated, in large part to the governor's advocacy work. Eventually the state stalled at something in the upper 50s which where a lot of red states wound up.
Then West Virginia experienced about 75% of it's total Covid death toll in the Delta and Omicron waves well after broad vaccine availability and overwhelmingly among the unvaccinated.
Except that the governor is pandering to his base, there seems little rational basis for the statement.

But a hillbilly from WV who has no background in microbiology or immunology or biochemistry or, shudder, “data science,” could possibly be right. Would be seriously hilarious if he ends up being right. My intuition as part of the control group with a background in micro tells me he’s right.

No, the point is some people needed the vaccines, absolutely, but many, many people did not, and we still do not know all of the consequences of that. As I’ve been saying for over two years. You believe he’s just being political. Maybe he is, but it doesn’t just make him wrong. Like you said earlier, Monday morning quarterbacking on a lot of stuff.
