Early on, I'd looked at the anomalous results from Africa and wondered why there weren't more cases since Africans, as a group, tend to be low in vitamin D. I attributed it to widespread use of hydroxychloroquine and pre-exposure to malaria, which might be factors, but I forgot how young and skinny most African nations are.

HCQ does not work against COVID though.
The biggest reason for death disparities, it turns out, is that less-developed countries have poor death reporting and tallying systems. Then there are differences in age pyramids.
India, for example, under reports COVID deaths by 5-8x if you compare to excess death metrics. Pretty big difference!

The Economist has an excellent page that tries to adjust for these confounders and it shows that COVID has hit Africa just as hard but because they are so young they simply haven't died as much.
Although excess-deaths statistics are the most comprehensive measure ofthe human cost of covid-19, they are only loosely tied to the number of people who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2. Because the virus is so much deadlier for older people than it is among the young, death tolls are heavily influenced by the age structure of a country’s population. Holding other factors constant, it takes a smaller number of infections to produce a given number of excess deaths in places where lots of people are aged over 65 than in those where relatively few people are vulnerable. As a result, excess-death data can only be used as a good indicator of the spread of covid-19 if you also account for demography.
Looking at their chart below you see that African countries are just as bad as many countries in terms of excess deaths over 65!

It's kind of funny that for a long time we've been hearing and reading from crazed, tin-foil hat wearers that Covid policy was all about grabbing power, and that the lockdowns and mask rules would never end.
