Good for your kid. My top 5 all ran faster than that and only the national qualifier is getting anything next year. One of my former guys ran 13;58 in college this year and he is a walk-on who has never been granted a scholarship. Why don't you tell us which school is giving scholarships out so that we can send our 15:15 kids there. Help some deserving kids out instead of gloating.

People find SOMETHING ELSE to be good at. You really think every person who is not "good at any sports" is deeply saddened by that fact and feels profoundly jealous of athletes? How blind are you? Didn't you just attend high school for 4 years as an 18 year old and notice that not everyone who doesn't play sports is whining on a running forum, needlessly asking for pity, only to be shot down by (realistic) trolls that have a lick of common sense?

Can I not ask for pity?
I was 10 years old back in the early 50s when I got polio. I recovered but had to wear leg braces for a year. When I was 11, I took them off and was so joyous, I ran 3 miles (we didn't know about the metrics back then) in 17 minutes.

Maybe you’d still suck, but you have two choices.
A) Try to get better anyway, because you have pride or self respect or just enjoy running.
B) Quit and do something else.
I honestly have no idea if you have any talent or not, but I guarantee you will never be successful at anything if you just mope along looking for pity.

I am not gloating, I am just telling a truth. Not gonna give away the school because I have no interest in giving up the identity of myself or the kid I coach. Just know this, there are D1 schools where they can't field a starting 5 that runs sub 26. They are out there, and unless you are local to the region, you probably wouldn't go there even for that bag of money. But they exist. Look up the list of D1 schools. Find the ones that suck the most. There you will begin to find your answers.

David, I don't know what kind of school you are at, but I work at a school with graduating classes of 60 kids and has a football program that has won states 5x in the past 15 years. Every kid who wants to run cross runs Varsity. And I have not had a year where sub 19 did not make top 7 scoring. Most years, sub 20 makes top 7. Realities are different at every school

something like that. I like phil as a poster. He's pretty valuable here, and I enjoy reading about his journey as a runner. but he makes a lot of assumptions without asking questions and kind of has tunnel vision as far as his beliefs go.
I broke 20 minutes (just) in my first 5K, however I'd done a season of track first.
Broke 20 for the first time when in 6th grade, only playing soccer and not starting to run yet. I was probably about 11.

26 min runners are not getting any money at a D1 school, dude. Give it up: you don't know what you are talking about.

Now days these kind of kids get to sign letters of intent and go through the dog and pony show acting like they are on an academic scholarship. Signing ceremony and all that. What a joke. My HS school has like 5 of those a year and not one of those kids are on an athletic scholarship.
I ran at a few XC summer practices my freshman year, and ran 19:08 at our intrasquad race in my first ever 5k. Ran 18:16 my next race, and 17:31 by the end of the season. 15:42 by the end of HS.

I ran 15:42 in high school XC and was offered 15k athletic aid from a private D1 school (20k academic) and 4k from a public D1 school. That was actually on a pretty fast course, but I was really recruited for high placing (8th in the largest division of one of the most competitive states in the country, and all-region at the NXN regional).
Supply and Demand. If scholarships exist, kids will take them which levels the playing field. So if a slow school has a scholarship, a 9:15 kid or a foreigner will always take it. All the coach has to do is make a few phone calls to kids. The schools that are slow have no funding. About 1/4 of the D1 XC teams have no scholarships. Another 1/4 have 1-2 to split amongst 20 guys. Even some of the fast schools only have 4 or 5 devoted to XC because they want to field a competitive track program. I have seen some stupid claims on here but thinking that kids running 26 minutes are getting more than books is just silly.
How about track times? If you did not run at least 9:10, we are not believing you. Which colleges are you talking about? You should be happy to share. My guys talked to dozens of colleges who offered nothing for 15:40. One guy who qualified for nationals got a few bucks just so he could say he got a scholarship.
