Woman runs 2:42:55 at Houston Marathon, turned down for Olympic Trials because she was in Corral B

If anyone actually reads the article, the blame should fall entirely on the Houston people. How do you refuse a runner with her college credentials? She was top 25 in the most competitive club cross race in history. Her coach is Steve Finley, who knows a thing or two about the elite racing scene. The Houston race director did an awful job here.

Is this girl trying to break every major road racing rule as a newbie road racer... while expecting everything to be handed to her? She needs to learn some etiquette and hard lessons.

This result would have qualified her for the elite/A corral at Houston, but she stupidly ran with someone else's bib.

Trying to get into the elite/coral A, 2 months out, when Houston has clearly stated procedures? Does she not read? She could have easily run a sub 1:25 half to get bumped up.

Then, does her and her coach not process what "extremely close" in the USATF guidelines means? 13 minutes isn't extremely close. The rules shouldn't be bent for her.

This whole thing is stupid. This athlete and her coach are learning some hard lessons.

According to her Strava she was wearing VaporFlys, so her gun time should be like 3:02.

She's a nobody.

So now Houston has reverence for the rules? Where was this attitude in the 2017 World Series?

I agree. They should change the rule.

Racing with somebody else’s bib is a silly problem the running world inflicted on itself and one that further distances us from popularity as a sport. It’s usually because the race won’t allow bib transfers and the person can’t run the race for whatever reason. 1 bib should be 1 runner and not matter who it is for a mass entry race. The BS about “oh he/she didn’t qualify and paid a bib mule” is also silliness in light of the fact that all those races allow charity runners and most have lotteries for non-qualified times. If I have a ticket to a concert, nobody at the venue cares if I show up or my buddy uses my ticket.

So she broke NYRR rules and bib muled the race? Big no-no! And so stupid to post on Strava. I was sympathetic but it seems she's extraordinarily entitled. Do not let her into the trials. sorry

No the blame is 100% on her. She ran a marathon in a way that wouldn't count for qualification. That is just stupid. If Houston wouldn't let her in, she should have run a different marathon. And it really sounds like it is all her fault for not running a qualifying time for the houston marathon. Maybe running that instead of club nations would have been a good idea.

I ran Houston from the A corral, I'm way slower than this woman and submitted a half time I ran at MP. She didn't want in the OT badly enough if she didn't prepare better to take her best shot and line up factors to her advantage when she easily could.

I kinda feel bad for her but I agree that she needs to learn proper road racing etiquette. Looks like she is just out of college and can have a pretty solid career if she stays healthy.

But it takes much less than a 1:25 half to get bumped up to the A corral. A corral is more like sub 52min 10k, sub 4hr marathon. That they won’t accept 5k times as sub 4hr marathon ability (she had run 16:17 for 5000 and no A corral is what is so crazy). These days with half marathons (especially halfs) & marathons filling up so fast, you almost have to cough up the money and register for like 6 marathons a year way in advance as a hedge even though you may actually only make it to the starting line for 2-3 of them.

I agree. If you are going to organize a race, you should know enough to get this girl to the front if she asked.

I do think USATF has to hold the line on chip times. This is Houston's mess to fix.

This clinches it for me also, in fact she should be suspended from NYRR races, guess she feels like the rules don’t apply to her!? She also setup the lady she bib mules for entry into the NYC Marathon and other races by using her bib. Where’s Derek when you need him?

I don't have any idea what her intentions were and haven't posted anything about that. I'm just saying it's against NYRR rules.

See my post above in reply to acookrunner. This is what I am talking about unsubstantiated assumptions of intent and blowing things out of proportion before you even contact her.

And why do you want to contact Derek? To publicly shame her forever and to get her banned from all races for this transgression that should just be dealt with by the NYRR?

I agree with scam. Public shaming for this kind of thing gets way out of hand. Just knock it off. It's not a high crime, yet it's talked about like it is, and the online "punishment" lasts forever.

I'm not even sure this was a thing before the internet. No one would have cared at all if you bought a bib off someone else.
