The real scandal is that universities (supposedly places of learning) would have athletic scholarships for "student-athletes" in the first place. But dollars run the roost (NCAA).

this just keeps getting more entertaining all day long as more of the individual fake athlete stories come out -

USC had the fake back up long snapper and the back up placekicker - the football coaches didn't know about them, but the assistant athletic director on the take slipped them into the admissions committee meetings. Since there is no scholarship and they are admitted only as a "recruited walk on", they just never show up on the next year roster.

Apparently, the way this operation was caught came from some kids who did not know that their parents had them pose as athletes - the unknowing kids then told coaches / school officials by accident that they were not even interested in the sports they were posing as. The disconnect caused the staffs to look more closely at the files.

In a very similar but unrelated case a 5' 8" Jewish basketball player from Florida got into Penn with the coach getting a bribe from his father. The student graduates from Wharton Business School at Penn the year - name is Morris Esformes.

coaches not only give scholarships, they also give the admissions department lists of athletes they would like to have, but who will not be offered a scholarship. These guys are either financial aid kids who dont need a scholarship, because aid covers the costs anyway, or they become recruited walk ons - admitted to run on the team, but with no money. As the Ivies have no scholarships everyone on the team falls into these groups.

The humor here is that in the cases where the coaches were bribed, they slipped the kids through as bench warmers, but it got them through the admissions process. In the cases where the athletic directors were bribed, the coaches didn't even know about it and the kid just never showed up for practice. (Except the track guy)

Once the school year starts and you either never show up for practice, or quickly quit the team, it doesn't matter as you still get to continue on for 4 years and finish your degree, as long as mom and dad keep paying that bill.

On that article, 29% of Harvard admits were either director's list types (children or relatives of big donors), recruited athletes, legacies, and children of Harvard faculty. Over 10% of the 2018 admits were children/relatives of big donors, 192 students! The vast majority of these are white. A certain percentage of admits are based on race, geographic location, musical instruments, projected majors, and means to pay (they say they dropped that criterion years back but the student body has parents making over $200k on average). So, admissions based solely on academic quality constitutes a small percentage of admits, and the middle class and poor are almost entirely crowded out.

I heard about a particular individual—let’s call him “individual-1”—who’s rich real estate daddy bought his way into Wharton AND got him out of having to serve in ‘Nam by making some BS story about bone spurs. What’s worse is subsequently “individual-1” then bought his daughters way into Wharton many years later. Pathetic.
