You will never make over a $100k in your life. That much is obvious.

I think a specific number for salary expectation will help you get what you want. They want you

to ask for what you are worth, then negotiate with you to test your mettle.

The other thing I sense here is you need to apply for jobs you find genuinely interesting and use that need for passion as an asset. Speak honestly about your internship and why you were unhappy with it.

I had to laugh when I read folks decry your English major background. The ability to communicate

will come in handy. Quants aren't expendable yet but are generally on their way out, everywhere except hedge funds.

My background: English major from a top 5 school, Teach for America, a couple years consulting for a no-name company, then business school. I interned at a CPG company over the summer and hated it (no return offer).

MBAs are a dime a dozen these days. No surprise you can't get a job based on that.

I find this "follow your passion" stuff hard to stomach. Not everyone gets the job they're passionate about (trust me, I know). Being passionate doesn't mean anything if you're working for a financially unstable company, have a crappy manager, aren't getting promoted, dealing with a lot of office politics etc etc. It's the people that make the job.

I spent close to 20 years working at several F50 companies, half of which as an FTE and then a consultant. The Dallas job market is hot, too. I've turned down three job offers this year without even actively looking for a new job.

Unfortunately the housing market here is hot too, so finding an affordable place to live close to work is becoming a challenge.

Half the point of an mba is to expand your network from where it is and get pulled into a classmate's or colleague's company. But you don't have much work experience and so you're missing out on that. Honestly a top 5 b school degree should pave your way anyway and so I think it's your personality and I interviewing. You wrote 2x that it wasn't bad, but that does mean it was good. Are you likable? Can you woo women (or men)? Your degree got you the interview and at that point they picked the person they liked the most to match their corporate culture. You need to be more likable and more flexible. Learn to make people smile.

Wharton grad here. History BA.

$160k in first job post grad. Work like a beast though.

I'd wager the problem is your resume probably says "English major" and "Teach for America" on it, right?

These are red flags that need to be removed. I was an Art History major and removed it from my resume because employers see it and trash the resume. Just have the name of your BA/BS school and year you graduated. If they ask what your bachelors was in you can tell them whatever you want so long as you have the knowledge in that field to back it up. That's what I did and I landed a finance job. I went to a low ranked MBA and I was able to figure this out... Just get creative. By not putting anything on paper they can't come back to accuse you of deceiving.

Again though (and I cannot stress this enough), the key to this is you must have the skillset to get the job and the knowledge of the field you are pretending to have a bachelors degree from. If not, you might be interviewing with an expert and they will see right through your lies.

Where are these numbers from? They look off. Could be because they aren't factoring in bonuses or reflect the fact that a lot of MBAs leave higher paying jobs like consulting and finance after a few years. Straight from the HBS employment report:

U.S. Median base salary: $140k

Median signing bonus: $25k

Enlgish Major... teach for America... can't you bemore cliche ???? EVERYONE is doing and wondering why they can't get a job...

Plain and easy, you are are a normal dude with an ok MBA and basically no real life experience, why would an employer hire you? because you put 'hard wordking, efficient, team-player blah blah " in your resume?

Then how did I get a summer internship and why am I getting interviews? Only a handful of responses (from people who are familiar with the MBA world) seem to understand the nuances of the situation.

There are 2 + 2 programs where undergrads get two years of work experience before they go to business school (i.e Harvard, Stanford, etc). There are world class hockey players, NFL players, military professionals, etc who were at my school that have 0 years of relevant working experience. I have 3 years of consulting experience, just in a niche field and for a company that isn't well known. Teach for America is competitive.

I feel like I'm talking to the crowd who probably thought their nephew was becoming a bank teller when he started his investment banking analyst position at BAML. SMH
