I remember when I first ran it the only jackets that were available were given to the volunteers. I remember thinking that I wanted one. Only a few thousand ran in the race back then so it was unusual to have run in Boston. I have no desire to wear one now. I don't really want to talk about it amongst people I know. It seems too braggy for such a pathetic slow pace that I ran it in.

Agree. A lot of the these dudes on here should get the jacket and wear it to a local run club or Whole Foods. It could get the attention of the ladies but then they might have to talk to them.
I was surprised that the 2017 Celebration jacket was already discounted to $71.50 at RunningWarehouse until I saw the only size available from them is XL. How many qualifiers would actually need a XL size? I bought a medium sided jacket for 15% off a few weeks before the race by using a coupon I received by signing up a new e-mail address for the Adidas newsletter. It was my first Boston Marathon. I did not wear the jacket in Boston as it was to warm. I did wear my GR Last Chance BQ2 marathon shirt that has the Boston colors. I was surprised by how friendly many of those around Boston are before and after the race if they see you wearing something that makes you look like someone who will run/did run the marathon.

It's just merch for the race to make money. Anyone can buy them. There's no etiquette. Wear it/don't wear it...whatever you want.
The jacket is 50% off right now on the Adidas official site. I just bought mine for $55.
It would have been fun to wear around Boston like everyone else but I'm glad I waited a week considering I just spent so much cash to run the dang thing.

There you go. April 26, 2017 it went on sale. This year there's an ugly orange jacket and it is still full price. What gives? I guess demand is much higher this year.

I got it, because who knows how much longer I'll be blessed with the ability and opportunity to run marathons. Nice to have a meaningful memento of this period of my life if things take a turn someday. And if not, I'll be pretty stoked to be a 75 year old running Boston 2053 and wearing this vintage 2018 jacket.

Did you get your size? I missed all the mediums.
Buying the jacket is part of the whole experience. You wear it during the weekend like a uniform! Then afterward, you wear it in recognition of a shared experience.
I can never wait for the sales at TJ Maxx because the size smalls sell out. They always over supply for the XLs. This is the case with all sporting events.
I don't run marathons, but I support the sport of running, so every year I buy the jacket and wear it around. It sparks conversation on the sport - so when people ask how I did or want to talk about their own race, I just say I didn't run but then I start talking about the elite race. and give my own analysis of how the pros did.
The toughest Boston ever. There's been a lot of hot years, but never the conditions this year. Much worse than 2007 according to runners that ran both. Wear it with pride.

I got the jacket last year when it when on sale for 1/2 price about 3 weeks after the race. This year it did not go done until a month after the race.
I saw someone wearing the 100th race jacket (1996) at the airport after the race this year. I asked the older gentleman if he had run it this year. He said no but he came to see his son run it. Nice to see the tradition of running Boston carry on to the next generation.
Easily identifying other marathon runners around Boston and the various airports after the race game me the opportunity to strike up a conversation easily with others.
A Boston runner leaving the parking lot at my work recently saw me in my 2017 jacket on one of the few days I have worn it to work. He ran it in 2017 and 2018 also. It was nice to meet another marathon runner at work. Meeting him would not have happened if I had not worn the jacket.
Never bought the jacket which always seemed unwearable and a bit of a rip off, I put my extra dollars into staying at the Four Seasons. If you have qualified, you are a reasonably accomplished runner so why the fuss?
Just take care of the t-shirts. I have taken most of my 10 NY and 10 Boston t-shirts out of the lineup and put into storage. They are nice and worn in but in decent shape. My kids have raided my race t-shirt collection now and taken some of my classic race t-shirts from the 80's so I am thinking the t-shirts are now cool if the old man's t-shirts are worth stealing.
I don't think my dad even got a t-shirt for running Boston in the 70's, so I wonder when the jacket came into being.
Youve earned it. Do what you want with it. I wear mine whenever i want. Who cares about what people think.
I say wear the jacket after you complete the race. You deserve it and it’s a nice jacket. The bitter people who don’t want you to wear it are jealous they never qualified for Boston and want everyone else to be miserable because they are. Who cares? It’s stupid to buy a jacket and not wear it. I do think there’s a tradition where you should complete the marathon before wearing it, but that’s it.

So it's the third Monday in April, what do I do? I just go do my own 26.2. It's a lot of back and forth loops, etc to hit the hydration/fuel spot. Just after 22 I see a guy wearing his Boston Marathon jacket. Completely random, but gave me a buzz. Told him what I was doing, He gets pumped and shouts out the encouragement you'd expect. That jacket helped me over the last 4.
Wear the jacket. You never know what good it may do.

I was racing a trail HM in the UK and a guy turned up for registration wearing one, only one I'd ever seen.
It was a definite power move and he did win the race.
