NY Post exclusive: Multiple women claim marathon training made them fat

I may not know what 3,000 calories look like either.

I generally eat about half a lb of pasta for lunch with homemade tomato sauce and parmesan cheese, ten or eleven fried corn tortillas with beans and rice for dinner, a bowl or two of Corn Chex with whole milk, and maybe four or five pancakes or some toast or sometimes a pint of chocolate milk when I'm getting a dehydration headache or otherwise once a week, and a couple times a week a small bowl of ice cream. This must be pretty close to 3,000 calories because I run an average of 14-16 miles per day and generally stay between 135 and 145 lbs on this mileage at 5'11" (usually below 140 but upward if I am getting dehydrated a lot and eating a lot potato chips and drinking chocolate milk to get over it). 16 miles is worth at least 1600 calories and I probably burn 1700 or 1800 calories without exercising.

Have any of you put on major weight while training?

I don't have time to read the article, but I see how this is possible. I was a member of a large running club and a popular thing with some women was to go to a diner or ihop immediately after their long run. They overestimate the calories burned from running versus gained from eating. You can't out exercise a bad diet.

I suggest these women get a Fitbit.

Exactly, but his post made it sound like running everyday was bad. Running everyday without easing into it causes stress fractures?! OBVIOUS. That's a problem with their regimented programs, not with running everyday.

They overestimate the calories burned from running versus gained from eating. You can't out exercise a bad diet.

I suggest these women get a Fitbit.

You can outexercise a bad diet. But we are talking 90+ mins of moderate intensity (running not walking) exercise per day. Very few people though are willing to come close to that.

Body builders (where the saying came from) can't out work a bad diet because that much exercise would inhibit their ability to pack on muscle

Just make sure to lock your bedroom door first. You don't want your mom to walk in on you while you're masticating.

90min of exercise a day is overkill if you're just trying to lose weight and be fit.

I think most runners underestimate how lucky they are in the genetics department.

Obviously that's a general statement, albeit it holds true for 99.9% of the population. Even when I was a competitive runner (somewhat elite), I barely did "90+ mins of moderate intensity (running not walking) exercise per day". I coached NCAA XC and had girls who had to watch what they ate and these were 18-22 year olds running 50-70 mpw.

"You can't out exercise a bad diet" is an old but still true good statement.
