In Appalachian Trail parlance, this would be called "yellow blazing." As in, "Kaiha Bertollini is trying to yellow blaze her way to glory."
She really should have read the Rob Young thread before claiming with no evidence that she broke a record. Sure a few people on the trail may remember her but that means nothing.
With so many cheaters out there, without absolute proof any attempt like this should quickly be forgotten because they diminish those like Karl who did it right by providing full evidence that should leave nobody doubting his record.

Meltzer is a legit runner. Getting some guy with a 13:30 5k, or whatever you have in mind, isn't going to result in a new record. Leg speed is not the primary limiting factor here.
All you DBs who go on about how slow the FKTs are should try putting in a single day at record pace on the trail. Just one single day. You probably think you'd get out there and run 7-minute miles, and if things got rough, you could always take it easy and just cruise at like 9-minute pace. You grossly overestimate your own abilites.

Day 45? Mounting injuries, physically and mentally demanding, but I think mostly mentally. Setting legitimetaly setting a record on that trail is a hell of a feat.
Wow, I wonder how this will affect Edward Cheserek's inevitable attempt. Can you imagine if they race each other? I'd like to see Ches posturing for position behind Beterollini for 42 days, only to try and sprint by her at the end. Does anyone know anything about her closing speed? God I love this sport!
I'm sure that she broke out a sub-6 mile after a 50 mile day when someone promised her a pack of smokes at the end.

My Boston analogy is not a perfect analogy but it works. Until 1986, Boston offered no prize money. Basically, it was an amateur event with no prize money, not unlike hiking the AT. The winner got a laurel wreath and the acclaim of having won. FKT on the AT gets no money, just the acclaim of being the fastest. If money is all that matters or track records, then the Boston Marathon shouldn't be a big deal either (and to some runners, it isn't).
And btw, back in 1986, the Boston Marathon was on an honor system... there were no chips every 5K. And Rosie Ruiz broke the honor system by crossing the line as first woman without having run all the way from Hopkinton.
Point taken that ultra athletes may see this more seriously, but how does one even know for example if there weren't a little tag team going on with the GPS signal. By no means am I accusing just saying its there's so many things you can do out in the woods 50 miles from everything. This whole incident shows you why FKT's are FKT's and you can't get too serious about it one way or the other because a smart conniving person would be unprovable. That's why if you want to get serious and be properly indignant do some real monitored competition, preferably something that requires moving faster than 20 minute miles on average. Otherwise everyone has their two cents and move on believe what you want to believe.
There may not be prize money, but in Meltzer's interview he claims that this latest attempt cost around 100K, which I would consider to be "serious" money. I imagine that Red Bull and other sponsors picked up most of the tab. Personally, I don't see the point to these FKT attempts, but others must, otherwise brands wouldn't be willing to shell out big money to associate themselves with them.

It is I have not subjected myself to this kind of torture but the fact is even this current record is beatable by a hiker given the pace and lot less pounding on the joints. Which is probably why its incredible these elite ultra runners are barely beating the record of a hiker. You just need someone who can go without sleep to bring the record down even more.

Yep. The 'easier' sections I've been on were extremely hilly with a rocky trail. Running 15 hrs a day would be suicide by broken ankle or ruined feet. A mile at brisk walking pace even without carrying gear is surely nearly as or more taxing calorie wise as a mile run on a flat road. The terrain in NH is ridiculous. Her physique alone is a bigger flag than Robert Young's was. She'd be an absolute rail going 50+ mpd on the AT.
