Boston qualifying standards are lax enough that anyone who is the least bit fit should be able to take a 10 or 15 minute break at the halfway point and still BQ easily.

Sounds like a bush league race. Do yourself a favor and never enter the race again.

I'm just curious because I was planning to run this weekend and had to bail due to a personal situation. Wondering if I would have been impacted.

The solution is to run faster. Running six minutes under a BQ is not difficult.

Right? costs $170 and you have to run on a narrow gravel trail for part of the race. And even wait for trains now. People will sign up for anything if you tell them it is a net downhill course and a good BQ race. Hard to feel bad for people who sign up for races like this.

If you've never wandered into the Rossi thread, the posts by the Rossi obsessives in these train threads will confirm you made the right decision.
hvargas: I believe this has happened in the past at our local Marathon from Schenectady to Albany. The race has timing mats placed before and after the tracks, and allows a net time. It doesn't keep you from possibly tightening up or something, but at least compensates for the time.
I believe the race also puts a course marshal out at the train crossing, just in case. As you say, not a perfect solution but likely the best that can be done. I believe that HMRRC -- the race sponsor -- tries to coordinate with the train (CSX, I believe), but no way does a local marathon have the ability to dictate train schedules.

When you sign up ,and get this, pay for a race you should be assured a reasonable amount of safety. We don't know yet if Barb contacted the railroad company and requested safe passage for the runners or that she called just to inform them of the race. I'm guessing it was the latter.
We don't know yet if anyone was injured either so there may be other concerns she has right now. Race directors have been successfully sued for things as trivial as lack of water or support on the course.

Despite absolute assurances from Norfolk Southern Railroad that trains would be suspended from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the morning of September 11, 2016, a train was dispatched just before 8 a.m., holding up runners in the seventh mile of the race.
Via Vice-President Gerry Yasso held a meeting on June 22 and exchanged multiple emails with Norfolk Southern officials, where race logistics, runner safety and public safety on the course were discussed in great detail.
“This is the tenth anniversary of this race, and all 10 races have crossed the Norfolk Southern rail tracks on Albert Street to enter Canal Park in Allentown,†said Yasso, Vice President of Development for Via. “Each and every year, we have contacted Norfolk Southern to assure runner safety, spectator safety and public safety at this intersection, and all other intersections that we cross. The incident is especially regrettable and was quite unexpected.â€
Runners affected by this incident should contact
with pertinent data and details on how the train effected their time. Times will be addressed on a runner-by-runner basis.
Race category award winners will be notified by the end of next week. Awards will be distributed by mail or available for pick-up at Via’s offices.

I'm certainly no apologist for the group that directs this race, but having directed races for 20+ years and dealt with the railroads annually the comment about trains doing their own thing is unfortunately true, in my experience. When you design a course that crosses RR tracks, you know that there is always a possibility that a train will interrupt the race. When you sign up for a race on a course that crosses RR tracks, you also acknowledge that it's possible you might get held up. Shi..Stuff happens. If you want to make adjustments, the only way I could see doing so is if you have chip mats on either side of the tracks. Otherwise you're just guessing.
The marathon I work for is on a course that crosses RR tracks. We have a fantastic relationship with the local RR company, their door is open and they listen when we ask for no active trains during certain times. But they also tell us there may be other companies they work with using the tracks who aren't as on board as they are. One year we had a train start moving across the race course, our former Course Director actually parked his truck across the tracks to block the engineer. (It was a slow speed situation where the train was driving on and off the course to hook up additional cars.)
We also produce a half marathon that USED TO finish about 100 yards past a railroad crossing. Despite the local RR company saying "no problem we'll stay off that crossing during your timeline", they started sending trains through during the race. We had lots of runners held up just before the finish for a couple minutes. The next year we moved the finish about 1/4 mile west to avoid that crossing.
