What the f*ck man? Carnitine is just like any other supplement that may slightly improve performance (especially if you are deficient). Just like fish oil, vitamin D, iron, probiotics, creatine, whey protein...

So Sleazy Salazar spends $3,000 on vitamin D? So what?

None of this is really surprising - just further confirmation of what most already know. Salazar's belief system is that as long as what you are doing doesn't result in a positive doping test, then it is not cheating. He's willing to push the limits and try anything to get a competitive advantage. They have their own in-house testers to make sure that they are within legal limits when they are trying supplements. Some people agree with this philosophy, others don't. I understand both perspectives.

While it is nice to think that runners are only trying to get competitive advantages through training, that isn't reality, and I can't really get too bent out of shape for Sal trying to be competitive. However, he is a world-class prick and an awful human being, so I dislike him on that basis alone.

The story about Salazar and Jeff Nelson at UofO is interesting. Salazar was an upper classman, Nelson a freshman. Nelson had the gall to finish a training run by out kicking Salazar. Salazar's running protocol did not allow him to be shown up by a teammate.

The extreme negative pressure put on Nelson by Salazar, and the UofO coach who defended Salazar, and being forced to run as training fodder though illness and injury, are what led Nelson to stop competing. A real shame that Salazar's ego was complicate in killing off Nelson's competitive spirit.
