Its hard to build a good track team and xc team because you often need a large roster of distance runners because some great guys dont pan out and some mediocre guys become great. Look at ferlic, he was a 9:20 kind of guy in high school and now he is a tank. Gibby understood this and wanted a large roster. I might be able to see the same amount of scholarships for men and women, but forcing schools to have the smae amount of walk ons from both genders is ridiculous.

In Claytons first year, yes indoors was a disappointment but outdoor was an improvement over last year. At B1G's throws, jumps and distance did well. they had absolutely no one competitive in sprints. they didnt even enter a 4x1 or 4x4 team on the mens side. you cant compete when you have absolutely no chance in 5 events. Rajewsky was brought in too late for recruiting purposes, so not much can be done in 2015 either. As for Gibby, it will interesting to see what went down. It may be as simple as when Leplante was shown the door, Gibby put in for the head job and didnt get it. He had a decent recruit class and rather than let him go then and jeopardize the class, they waited to find a successor.

This implies Julie's husband is on board with moving.

Her husband is no-longer at Co School of Mines, he's now coaching at Albany. Doubtful that coaching men at Michigan is on the radar.

I was just speculating on Henner, any other clues as to who the replacement might be? Perhaps Hayes?

Officially announced today on MGOBLUE.com. Will be interesting to see who's named as a replacement.

I spoke with Gibby at NCAA's. He is a class guy. Spoke highly of Michigan and his boss. A very good guy. Next team to get him will be very lucky.

So why do some people have negative comments on here about Gibby? I was recruited by him a few years ago at W & M and had a great experience in my recruiting process with him. I took an official there and really enjoyed my time visiting and getting to know him.

Gibby cares 100% about his job and building his own name and 0% about his athletes. He loves to assign a kid 140 mpw at 6 min pace and then tell the kid that its his own fault hes injured. Bad coach, worse person.

I left coaching a few years ago, but will say this.

Jerry Clayton will get the job done.

The Men's team will not be huge, but the guys on the team will score points at the conference and national meet.

Jerry does not care where the points come from, but if you are on scholarship (More then books) he expects you to score points at the conference level at least.

A 10.5 guy and 14:00 guy are great, but do not help you at major conference meets. He will not put money into those type runners.

Here's the problem—13:45 guys don't just appear out of thin air. You have to recruit and develop them over the course of several years. Maybe they shift recruiting to events that are easier to spot talent, like sprints and jumps, but you can't cut your way to a good distance team. Any good mid/long-distance coach knows that.

That's my fear. Michigan has had a great history in distance running and very few great sprinters in the last 35 years. I've heard nothing but great things about Coach Clayton, but I can't see how he can cut his way to a great program that has a strong distance component unless he's going to recruit foreigners who have already been developed. Laplante should have never been hired and certainly should never have been the head coach. We're going to be rebuilding the program for years. I hope Clayton knows what he's doing - he's got a lot of good coaches vouching for him - but I have my doubts...
