wow nice to see my thread pop back up haha i see discussion has been going about daniels.
sadly for me, i got injured after being too aggressive in my build up back around the end of december. i was out for 4 months with achilles problems. im rebuilding my base but i dont see sub 15 in my future this year. im kinda bummed but just trying to be consistent now. hopefully next spring i can really get things going. doubt anyone cares but i got excited seeing my old thread back on the front page
I'm not sure if someone else has already said this, but I believe the schedules in the back are meant to be "sample" schedules not definitive, one-size-fits all training plans. The value of the Daniels Running Formula is in reading and understanding and applying the meat of the book and of course the VDOT tables!
I've used Daniels for several seasons, using a lot of the workouts in the back and they can be very difficult (especially the marathon programs). I've had some success and some disappointment and have also dabbled with other methods like Pfitz and some of Canova's basic ideas but always find myself going back to Daniels.
I think the key thing to remember with any training method is that you want to achieve a steady progression. Suddenly getting faster is usually not sustainable, but with a steady progression you can keep getting better and better season after season.

Glad to hear things went well. I tried for a month to follow daniels but stopped - I wanted to run with my team more, and after being in this sport for 30 years I wanted to listen to my body more.

Yes it is possible.
I ran sub 15 off of a mix if Daniel's 5k and 1500m training at age 20. My only suggestion is to take the easy runs easier. Running sub 4min/km easy runs burnt me out pretty bad when going 80-100km/week
I ran 14:20 at 5 k and 29:51 on Daniels exact individual paces but no phases and 50-65 mpw.
Nowadays you all probably know I have developed my own system with Daniels exact paces
and so far very successful.
