What is the toughest Workout you've ever did?

I've recreated the 35k Lydiard Waiatarua run in Montreal and ran it alone without any carb. I found it pretty brutal and it felt as hard as running a marathon.

I just recently completed my first college hills workout and it went like this.

1 mile warm-up.

400 meter hill with 120 feet gain.

9 miles on quite possibly the most hilliest terrain you can ever imagine.

400 meter hill with 120 feet gain x 2.

1 mile cool down.

Talk about getting big legs.

Ok so this is a really hard workout, took me about 4 days of doing nothing to recover !! Honestly, it is a speed endurance, lactate threshold, speed, and mile workout. So it is broken 400m( you run for 300m at a little slower than pace for the full 400, then rest for a minute, then sprint the last 100m) x 10, but broken in to 4 sets. So it is (400m x 1) + (400m x 2) + (400m x 3 )+ (400m x 4 ) and after each set you do a 1k tempo "recovery" , more of a lactic acid magnet to really give you a good speed endurance workout. But at the end of set 4, do a 4k tempo run, preferably grass but can be the track.

Set 1- (300m + 100m) x 1 - goal 48 seconds

300m-38, 1 minute rest

100m-10, 1:45 rest

1k tempo recovery

Set 2-(300m + 100m) x 2 - goal 50 seconds

300m-39, 1 minute rest

100m-11, 2 minute rest

Repeat ^

1k tempo recovery

Set 3-(300m + 100m) x 3 - goal 52 seconds

300m-42, 1:15 rest

100m-10, 2:15 rest

Repeat twice more ^

1k tempo recovery

Set 4-(300m + 100m) x 4- goal 54 seconds

300m-43, 1:30 rest

100m-11, 2:30 rest

Repeat three times more^

This brought my PR in the mile from 4:16.73 to 3:58.89, in the 5k ( cross country ) went from 14:35 to 13:59, went from 1:54.72 in the 800, to 1:46.78, and finally the biggest improvement I had after this workout, was the 10k ( my primary event, that's why I put this as a mile workout, as yes I improved more in the 10k, but I am not a mile runner so the improvement of 18 seconds is, in my opinion, out ways more than my improvement in the 10k) I went from 28:45.67( Track) to 27:59.87( Track ).

This was my freshman of college

8 x 400m. Coach made a mistake when we asked what pace. We were told 800m race pace. Most of the guys dialed it back to 1500m pace or just slightly faster. I took it literally and ran true 800m pace for all 8 reps.

Killed my season.

A hill session I used to do in high school. It was about a quarter mile long and pretty steep. When I would hammer it and run back steady down would be brutal. But would get me in incredible shape. I would usually just do 6 or 8, but I once did 12 and was done for a few weeks. Another workout I would do in high school. 10 miles at a good effort over this trail of just up and down pretty good hills. Once I could do this under 65 minutes I knew I was ready.

Never found any HS workouts to be super challenging except 6 x 300m cut-downs at the end of a run or an interval session. Heard at some of the other HSs in the state, the runners did 6 x 400m with 60 sec rec in 56-57. That had to be tough.

University workouts:

4 x 400m with 400m jog (recovery under 5 minutes)

54s in training shoes on the fly.

6 x 200m with 200m jog (recovery under 2 minutes)

26s in training shoes on the fly.

Running the hill near the campus: Even one time, if starting off fast, was so tiring that could not keep pace. It must be no more than 400m, maybe 500m,, and very steep.

For me it's gotta be something in the half marathon/marathon range:

3 miles, 10 x 400m, 3 miles

3 x 3 miles

15 x 1km

8 x mile

4 x 2 miles

25km @ MP

24 miles w./ 10 x (1 @ MP, 1 float)

Shorter but faster:

Did a double workout once -- am: 2 @ T, 800, 2 @ T, pm: 2 x (6-4-3-2) on the track

Tried Centro's 8 x (300m hard, 100 uptempo), 3 mile jog, spikes for 6-4-3-2 on the track

Not particularly effective:

6x400m @ ~1000m-1200m pace w/ 45s rest.

The rest was the killer. Finish, turn around and walk back to the line. You don't have time to think about how much pain you're in. Was dead after #2. Was on the ground for 10 minutes after #6.
