Update!
Found an US citizen runner that run an 1500m conversation sub 4 mile (3.42,61) in Finland , in 2014 summer, and had quite few races there. But he broke four with 3.58 later that year in the Sir Walter mile.

which doesn't fit with Donald Cowart who, between the 3:42.61 in Finland and that post ran several races including a 5000m at the Raleigh Relays, four 3km steeple's in 2015 including the Pan Am Games in Toronto, an 8km road race in Richmond, VA, etc, etc, etc. the facts just don't fit.

I'm in my mid-30s, was a mid-D runner in college and never lost too much fitness since. My training of course has been reduced to easy milage with interval training and long runs when I have a marathon coming up - although I've pretty much done this every year since college. Anyway, found my old spikes the other day and after an easy 6-miler I stopped by the track and ran a 53 quarter. Haven't turned the wheels that quickly in a long time so it was extremely painful, but after a couple of minutes of shaking out the legs I felt pretty good. I am now debating whether to throw myself into sub-4 training and just see what happens. I am going to the track again this weekend to see how easily I can run under 2 for the half. I always believed I had plenty of speed and maybe after all these years of doing some mileage I also have enough in the tank to take me a bit longer than I was able to go back then on a fast pace. I don't mind mileage but hate the longer workouts, and love the short stuff and hills. Will report back, maybe this is the beginning of a new journey.
I guess at this point I'm more interested in knowing how much people felt they needed to commit to do this and how big of a factor was self-motivation? I have the latter, but would really be disappointing to keep hitting a mental wall. I want to remain encouraged if I decide to go all in.
I would do some high end speed work as sharpeners
Esp when tapering
10 x 100 at faster than strides but not all out

Do it. What have you got to lose? I have a mile PR so slow most would laugh when I tell them I'm chasing sub-4, training at altitude. But I'm doing it because it's worth a try.
Did you ever break 4? The training plan you used to reach 4:06 in college is pretty good. I might have to give it a shot. Would you recommend it?
