It looks as if your mother perfectly fit the definition that hahaYO put out there. I'm not sure why you would get defensive over that. She obviously was addicted and had lost control. It doesn't sound like she was a 'mean drunk' or physically abusive to family but she was abusing herself. The tremors and a pretty good sign that she had a physical addiction to the drug.

I've had this conversation before and I try to explain what real alcoholism looks like and its not a bad Sunday morning. Its not losing track of your drinks with your friends after the big game and hooking up with a fat girl in the back yard for laughs. It's a bad every day, every night, every second. Its drunk all the time. Its destroying your friendships. Its destroying your family. Its not remembering weeks of your life. Its not a game. Its not a joke. Its not shots at the bar. Its missing the holidays with your family because you are in the hospital for a month before you can even go to rehab. Its drinking alone at 5:30 am in the bathroom with the lights out before you go to work just so you can get to work.

I just want people to know that it is a terrible thing so they don't joke around and misunderstand what it is and possibly actually end up an alcoholic.

I blew .24 once, and this was when I was being checked in to a detox facility after being driven there in mid black out by my ex-girlfriend. Not a fun time! Granted, I probably sobered up a bit on the 1.5 hr drive, but .4 is insanely high

A detox facility is a place where an alcoholic can go through withdrawal under the care of medical personnel. I'm a criminal defense attorney. I have a client in jail right now on an emergency hold, waiting for transfer to an in-patient treatment program. She was detoxing so badly that 5 days after being picked up on a warrant (for not doing treatment), she was unable to stand, was hallucinating and was shaking so bad.

My dad died of cirrhosis. It's a horrible way to die.

The highest I've seen in my cases was .4 and this woman (who was quite small) actually managed not to hit anyone driving home (although she hit the curb). We see alcoholics with high .2s and some .3s fairly regularly. From what I've read, though, most people are pretty impaired at the "legal limit" of 0.08. It might seem low, but even if you aren't weaving all over the road, you are impaired in reaction time.

I'm a somewhat heavy drinker. I always thought that when I was super wasted I would be like a .25 or so. Well, I've got a friend with a breathalyzer and turns out i'm only around .16 when I'm wasted out of my mind.

Amazing to me that people out there can be double that.

Amy was also very unhealthy as in she had anorexia & Bulimia for about 10 years or so. Since her early teens til her death. She proud weighed about 90 pounds or less on top of alcohol withdraws. Yeah her body was weak and tired the damage was done

I registered a 0.32 after a friend’s bachelor party about 15 years ago. One of the guys kept a breathalyzer in his car. I was 6’ 140lbs and doing tequila shots in between drinks with my two buddies that were over 200lbs. I got a cab home, but don’t really remember the ride.

I don’t drink alcohol anymore.

.08 - .10? I used to run with a pretty rowdy crew but always did my best to take it as easy as possible with the booze.

I've never driven drunk myself and hopefully will never do that. I do know several people who do it consistently. That sickens me. I do believe that some people can drive drunk nearly as effectively as sober but obviously others would not be able to pull that off. It's really dependent on the individual. Alcoholics are probably the best drunk drivers while the two beer drunks would be the worst drunk drivers, I'd assume. I'd recommend calling the police if you suspect it. We need these drunk drivers punished accordingly and held responsible. They are either selfish, have very low self esteem or both.
