The OP ran 38 minutes before running doubles. If your pr had improved whilst doing the SAME mileage then I would be impressed.
Running doubles AND increasing mileage is meaningless. It's obviously the mileage which led to improvement.
Yes, its the mileage that leads to improvement, almost always. Doubles allow a lot more mileage. For instance running 100 mpw, is like 10/5 with a 15 mile long run and a short day.
Going from 70 to 100 mpw in singles takes a lot more effort than doing it in doubles though. I don't think too many people want to do 15 miles every run.
