How can I be a responsible adult and still run high mileage?

I am really at a loss. I love my family, I have a good job and I love running. The problem is that it is hard to do all three. I feel as though I get judged by others when I place a high priority on the running. Also, my wife is having a hard time with my running. This is new. She ran D1 in college and still runs, but keeps her mileage to 35-40 mpw. She gets up and runs with the jogger stroller every morning after I leave for work. The problem that I have is that on days when I run a good 8-10 in the morning (6am), I rarely have the opportunity to get back out there in the afternoon. I have a hard time justifying it to my wife, who has had a rough day at home with the kids. I also love my kids, so I want to be around them too. Add work into the mix, and it just gets to be too much. I want to keep training hard, but I fear that my days of 85 mpw are coming to an end.

Yeah, I agree. People that run 85-120 mile weeks do it for the purpose of competiting at a high level. Doing it "just because you like it" is greedy and stupid. What if you were playing darts for hours upon end, taking time away from family? No body on here would be telling you how great you are.

again, this is the most ignorant post on here. no one said anyone was doing any thing 'specail' and some people don't do it for the purpose of competiting at a high level -- yeah, it might be selfish to do what you love, but that's true with ANYTHING not just running -- that does not mean it's compulsive or a crutch, or stupid. I think if someone were posting about practicing darts it's the same thing -- it's just a decision one has to make to make their life work around all the things they love --

Besides all people are inherently selfish -- it's the level of selfishness one rises or falls to.

I'm puzzled by your use of the word "ignorant". Typically, the word means something like, "lacking knowledge or awareness". However, it does not seem that the poster you are criticizing is lacking in any knowledge or awareness, but rather has an opinion that you disagree with. Does "ignorant" now just mean "something undesirable"?

Grasshopper, spend more time running quality workouts and less time replying to the posts of old burned-out runners and you will reach running nirvana.

Seems like the issue might be better captured by discussing how much time people spend running rather than how many miles.

In 9 1/2 hours a week of running some people probably can run 90mpw, while others might cover more like 60.

Also important to count the extra sleep needed, core workouts, transition time etc... and then start to think about what is a 'reasonable' amount to try to allocate relative to family and work.

Heck, do you really have to run 100 miles? Consider the injury risk!!

To your question, I think the 2/3 rule sounds about right. Of course you won't divorce her like someone proposed, and you won't stop doing what you love - running. So, what is left? Maybe you can cut your work just a little bit back. Try to change so that you have to work only 34/35 hours instead of 38/39/40. Those hours are the hours your work steals from your hobby.

Yeah, it's tough. But ya'know you're a dad...and to me that above all comes first.
