malmo, you've mentioned "going to the arms" a few times so I'll bring this up: to my eye, Loxsom runs with unusually stiff (almost locked) elbows and shoulders, which seems to work fine in the early stages, but hinders his ability to shift gears. I know it will be considered ludicrous by many to critique a talent like him, but when you compare his late race form to the greats like Coe, Kipketer and Rudisha, it seems like he is missing a key element in his development here. Thoughts?

You needn't compare him to the greatest runners in the world, just compare him to the top Americans or the top Penn Relays runners. They all go to the arms and they all change cadence at the end of races.
Look at the most prolific Penn Relays runners: Mark Belger, Don Paige, Marcus O'Sullivan, Eamonn Couglin etc. The kill-switch goes on, and the form changes dramatically, and they go. None of them merely maintain form.

Never thought if PSU got a leg like that from Borchers that they would lose. Glad to see great races from him and all the guys. One of the best college 4x8's at Penn in a long time!
NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!
1) Lionel didn't blow them out of the race for once by running like an idiot. Even though he died at the end, he fought hard not to blow it for them all.
2) Borchers, the weakest link on the entire squad, runs the race of his freakin life. Never before has anyone ever seen him run like a man possessed! That last straight he simply threw every ounce of fury he could muster into it. That's how you do it. That's how Don Paige used to do it!
3) Foster. Kept the momentum going. Dug in when he was obviously starting to fade.
4) Loxsom. Knew he had to squeeze Andrews hard to have a chance. But when you don't go to the arms or change your cadence, while your opponent does both, the result will end up like this.
Lose the race, but a HUGE step up in competitive fire! Well done!
And it should be noted that those were the 2nd and 6th fastest times in Penn Relays history. Only the 1985 and 1982 events were better than 2011.

Nothing surprised me about their race today. If you know what each of these guys posses then you know that today was them performing within themselves. Their training, competition, and environment just came together.
If you saw Lionel give PSU the lead against Texas at Penn 2 years ago, or Sam run 1:48 out at Oregon as a soph closing in 53.x, or Foster run 1:46 to make his first NCAAs finals, or Cas get silver at Jr Worlds you know these guys all dig and all compete. Hard work and determination doesn't come in a single form. To each his own.
Malmo, you don't know, or understand, a single athlete on the PSU program...don't take shots at these guys until you do. Your out of touch and terribly narcissistic.
Sure I understand exactly what this team is about. I identified the problem, I offered the solutions. They heard it, and clearly responded.
No one expects PRs, but all ran reasonably close to theirs, and all did the job that they were supposed to do, and had the ability to do the same thing last year, but didn't.

Borchers, I'm most happy for him. (who ran 1:49.9 in that meet in Oregon, btw) the biggest waste of talent in the history of Penn State Track ran out of his mind today. Perhaps he can salvage a career after all? He can party like a rock star tonight, but after tonight he's got to decide whether or not kicking asses is fun or not? I know if it was my choice, and it was the last 6 weeks of my college career, I'd choose the kicking asses and having fun part.
Like I said, it's a lot to ask for PRs from everyone, but imagine if Williams ties his ... that's 1.7 seconds, when subtracted from 7:12.90 is 7:11.2. HOLY SHIT! The difference between that and 7:11.17 is a hiccup.
FWIW, Loxsom will run under 1:45 before he graduates, but will he ever find the gear that Borchers found today, and what I've said is inside each one of them? Who knows? When crunch time comes I want to see his arms driving forward and his knees lifting up, and a sudden change in turnover. When that happens he will be winning nationals.
All they have to do is watch reruns of that race and pay attention to Borchers leg and say out loud "That looks fun. I wanna do that." Pay attention to the sudden lift and shift to the arms by Andrews and say out loud "I wanna do that" too.

Thats the race I'm talking about...meant to say Washington. Regardless, the 149 from Oregon his frosh was yet another example of him dropping a monster kick, neg splitting, and taking the field in the last lap. Then again, thats his typical style, just like Foster and Cas have theirs, so hes probably too robotic for your likes.
Anyways, to call Borchers the biggest waste of talent in PSU history goes again back to the point...you simply don't know this program and its a shame you continue to make remarks about their abilities.
Is Sam maybe the most inconsistent runner to come through Penn State, sure, thats arguable. But to call someone a waste who has taken school records away from the likes of Greg Fredericks, won a Big Ten title in the 15 as a freshmen against pure studs, scored in 5 or Big Ten champs (and has doubled to help the team), shown up to run in every Penn race hes competed in (which includes handing off neck and neck with Centrowitz in the 12 last year...and then 147 this year), and most importantly PR'd in EVERY event since coming to college.
People seem to forget that Sam came to PSU before there was anything. He was one of those guys who bought into the history of the program, and what could be, and came here to help try and change things. Did his 4 years turn out like he had wanted, no, but were his intentions good, absolutely. For someone who was a teenager and young adult at the time that is something I find pretty amazing. He took a risk that every PSU athlete and alumni should look admirably at that. You don't...but I hope others do and will.

Sounding off? I gave my opinion.
1) I identified what I believe to be the problem with them and offered my opinion on specific things that needed to be addressed. They included.
a) Lionel Williams runs like a maniac on the first lap. If I were coach I'd tell him that under no circumstances is he to take the lead until 200m to go.
b) Borchers. A crap shoot, a box of chocolates, and I didn't think there's anything outside of graduation that could be done to help. You either get 1:49 or 1:54 out of him.
c) Foster. Runs like a robot. Always fades and doesn't dig in deep at the end of races.
d) Loxsom. Another robot, but faster.
The result. Obviously they took the message to heart.
2a) It was clear that Williams was under strict orders NOT to take the lead. He didn't. After 400m the pace was so slow he was forced to take the lead, and it was the right decision. If he ran the same as he did last year instead of 1:50.7 you now have another 1:52 leadoff.
2b) Borchers. Runs out of his mind. You could tell he was struggle with the quickness of his competitors in the first lap, but rather than try to run with them he settled in behind. Ran like a pro. With 200m to go you could see that his eyes were forward towards the leader and not cncerned at all about the guys on his shoulder. With 100m to go, he supddenly changed to a ferocious lion went to the arms, and his turnover, and ate everyone alive. This was, BY FAR, the best race he has ever run. Even better than he ran in high school
2c) Foster. Didn't go out too hard like was his MO last year, and settled in. Said he wanted to take the lead with 250m to go in the SMR but quickly (and correctly) changed his mind and waited for the straight. Didn't move forward in the finish, but didn't lose ground lie he usually does. In the SMR he said the last 50m was "the hardest he'd ever run. I dug hard" I don't doubt him. In the 4x800 he was in a tougher position given the surprise lead by Borchers. Handled running in the DMZ well. Not too fast. Not too slow. When they came up on him he didn't tie up and fought for every inch given about a half meter lead.
2d) Loxsom. He still runs like a robot, but when you're a very fast robot you can get away with it. He aqueezed Andrews balls hard and for a moment it looked like he had it done. Then Andrews went to the arms and that turnover and knee lift thing. Loxsom continued to run like a machine and that was the difference.
It was the best result one could possibly expect.
As you might well know I could give a damn about running form, you run how you run. But when it gets down to the finishing kick, your body has to transform, and most important of all, your mind has to transform. It's got to be rehearsed. It's got to be automatic. Your arms better be driving hard and in a forward plane, and you'd better be concentrating on knee lift/butt kick and turnover.
I've addressed the problem. Offered the solutions, which by the way all seemed to get magically imbued in this team all at once, and in the same week that I said it. Pure coincidence. Your response is personal insults.
As far as Borchers being the biggest waste of talent in Penn State history -- there is no doubt about it. He ran 4:03.3/1:51.5 in high school. He should have been running 3:36s a year ago. In four years this is what he produced. (remember all of his real bombs will never show up on Tilastopaja's radar, and there have been many)

No hopefully he gets it in his head that being a badass was kind of fun. A lot can happen in 6 weeks. It's been a cold spring at Happy Valley this year and as the weather warms up maybe his fitness will continue to improve. It's all a matter of desire at this point. Does he want to exploit his own massive talent or not? Imagine what it would feel like to improve that 1500 from 3:45 all the way down to 3:38, 3:37 or 3:36? I'd bet that Borchers would find that running 3:37 is even more exciting than 1:47, and he'd finally live up to his potential.
malmo: you dont know who sam is so stay out of his business. and for your information, concerning the shit you have been talking about robots, sam borchers is probably the least robotic runner that I have ever seen and since you dont know shit about the person he is, you wouldn't know that.
Malmo as usual is actually dead on here. Borchers has been a waste of talent overall. For every good race he runs, there have been about 3-4 races that make you shake your head. PSU has acquired the label of talented but lacking passion by those who DO know the sport. When the big boys are doing their thing at the NCAA meet, PSU's crew can't usually be found. What you fellas with your panties in a bunch don't realize is that Malmo actually has been there and done that and simply would like to see his alma mater step it up and run to their potential.
