Track Etiquette: What is it with people?

Sounded? It's written, big guy, and perfectly clearly at that.

What's up with all the overindulging on particular self-promoting experts on here, anyway? I thought that was the province of Jogger's Planet and its imitators.

What does this mean? Possibly you have noticed him setting the world on fire?

"People who are focused enough have no steam built-up from anything except that which originates within."

Are you making an analogy with a steam train? What is the link between steam and focus? Am I more focused on a cold morning because I exhale steam? Are you a 19th century physiologist and have some obscure steam engine-heart explanation?

Please help me hardest nipples.

And whilst you are at it can you clarify where you draw the line between soft and focused when you encounter an obstacle at your local track?

Well, Daniel, if you follow the thread then you'd see that it was in response to someone mentioning 'blowing off steam.'

Regarding the other part, if you have to ask then you couldn't possibly understand the answer.

I don't have a coach. The next best thing is to follow a training plan written by someone who knows more about coaching than say, me. I know, it's a crazy concept. The idea of admitting that someone might have a better idea how to train than me. I'll get creative and start using my own mind a bit more after I stop improving.

What led you to believe that Daniels is like a poor mechanic? I understand the frustration with blind followers (for example - people who believed real estate agents who said in 2005-2006 that housing never goes down. And people who are currently trying to run barefoot on pavement because of that book about Indians who ran barefoot.) But by most accounts, Daniels has proven a pretty effective training plan.

Cite these accounts, please. The point was that just because he knows more than you clearly doesn't mean a hell of a lot. It leaves a wide margin of running knowledge from which to choose. Again, the poor mechanic would be "pretty effective" compared to you trying to replace your transmission on your own.

I consider Daniels a fine physiologist who has written a book that would appeal to a wide audience and who markets himself well.

In the 90s he led State University of New York at Cortland to eight NCAA Division III National Championships and developed more than 100 All-Americans.

Starting in '01 he began coaching Magdalena Lewy-Boulet who has since become an Olympian.

Louie Quintana, head coach at ASU, uses Daniels' methods and has proven it successful with his women placing fourth at both the '05 and '07 NCAA's. He's also had success with the men, but more on an individual basis (quite a few All-Americans)

I would prefer a "fine physiologist" over a quack coach any day of the year.

His book appeals to a wide audience because it brings structure to that training which many runners lack. It introduces them to the concept of a truly well thought out and structured training program. It also gives them a commonly understood vocabulary with which to discuss that training.

There are many such books out there that attempt the same thing, yet Daniels' continues to remain extremely popular while others fade into obscurity. Chalking that up to "marketing" is misdirected. Daniels doesn't market himself much at all, unless you consider the occasional post on LetsRun as "marketing". Most people hear about his book on recommendation from another runner, not from an advertising campaign.

I think I already knew that, though I don't know why you trotted out this asinine strawman. There are better choices than either, though they do not enjoy a prominent place on the shelves of Barnes & Noble or Borders. People who buy self-help books mostly aim for what they want to hear, not to be truly challenged. People who write those books aim squarely for a sufficiently low common denominator.

The other respondent just has no idea. Venture outside of Letsrun once in a while, there is clearly a hell of a lot that you're missing.

Unreadable to you, I believe. I've hit home so hard and accurately that it's too painful for you to read it? Hence the denial? So I'm right to say that you frequently contribute to the problems at the track the other posters have stated?

You r entitled to yr opinions,and those opinions r welcome in this discussion, but the content and tone of yr posts seem like you are on this discussion NOT to contribute and exchange ideas, but to put others down. You repeatedly use smartass remarks and name-calling to flag others off and to disguise your insecurities and the hollowness of yr posts, which serve to derail the discussion.

Jack Daniels is a SOLID program. You'd be foolish to think otherwise

Didn't get to see this thread when it was active because my team was in the thick of championship season when it came out.

Most people on the track are just testing out things that Larry Rawson said (like running a 61 second 400, which the elites are holding for two miles). Larry is very popular, so the tracks become crowded after telecasts.
