Jakob skips a meaningless championship and all of you guys are acting like it’s the end of the world 🤣. His focus is the 2026 season, makes sense after his injury.
People said the same type of thing when he pulled out of non-championship track meets this year.
I mean, if you were there, can you tell us the pace of his sessions? Don’t leave us hanging LMAO!
He’s training quite wierd atm, even if his shape is not 100% he has sandbagged some sessions. 1k threshold over 3 min avg and several seconds slower than usual for 400s.
ihave been harping on this for a while, you do not want to red line too often, you do not want to pr in training, which is a great sign, and to back it off , take the pot off the boil, even take a mini break, because if you are setting records indoor, run cross country, then pr in training, all in a row, you are pishing the envelope, better to hit near pr with ease, relatively speaking. and train up to 80 prtcent capacity, and at the right time , sure go 90 percent to bring the pot to a boil.
with that said, and jacob being the ultimate gamer, it is wise to so called sand bag it, and not turn up the heat all the way, as one more solid training block will bring him all the way back, and have plenty of red line turbo energy in the track season where his window can be 10 or more weeks.
guys like kessler and grant had run their turbo energy out of them by the time the champs came.
last season, was a chance for metrics on red lining, where if they could do it again i am sure they would take back a couple sessions of super pr work, and inject maybe an off 4 days here or there.
I have no idea if this is the reason for his withdrawal, but I can say that his shape at the camp in Sierra has been modest. The sessions clearly have been slower than usual.
No way to verify, but what we do know is Jakob relishes winning at European XC. He does it at every opportunity, and then takes the Indoor season seriously, too. This year would hold even more significance as Europe showed out at Worlds in Jakob's absence between Almgren, Gressier, and Kimeli.
So now we have him skipping an event he loves at a prime spot to show he's still the man in Europe. I see they are spinning it as preparing for the 2026 season, but the BS detector is up. Often, this is the rationale we hear before learning of a setback/injury that is the true reason why athlete X is skipping an event you'd think they'd do. Think Grant Fisher.
If he doesn't hype the return in advance and open up on February 19th in Lieven, it's time to get very worried about the long-term situation here. As it stands now, we're not there yet.
So you think that Jakob and the director of the Norwegian Athletics Association are hiding an injury setback!? Why should they do that? Do you think they has been liing before?
The withdrawal was announced the 4th of December and the same day in the afternoon or evening a video was put on instagram regarding an AFTERNOON 25 x 400m session. Do you think he would have run such a session if his achilles tendonitis had flared up?
I think there is another possible explanation: That Jakob had decided to leave rainy/ snowy Sierra Nevada to go to sunny Florida with his family, including his brothers with wifes and children, to spend the Christmas and New Year in a warmer environment and to prepare for Worlds XC.
I don´t know how likely this scenario is but wouldn´t we all be happy to see that. Apart from the likes of Tortoise and Armstrong who will only watch the race in retrospective if Jakob gets humiliated.

and dont go changing things before a champs.
you dance with the one you brought to the dance.
When did Ingebrigtsen PR in training? If he did, was it the 1500, mile, 2000m, 3000m or 2-mile?
After the last year, any “setback” should be taken seriously.
That said, I thought this was likely based on the content he was putting out. Only recently he had a video where he was something like 8 days into training, just barely building into threshold sessions. I get there are delays in posting on YouTube, but even if that was a month ago it seems like a quick ramp up to racing a 10k. Especially after a terrible season and a true break for tonsillectomy. This is WAY more of a break than he’d normally take, and his build is starting from significantly lower fitness.
So this is not surprising or concerning. I’ll save concern for later in indoor or early outdoor if he keeps pulling out of races.

Jakob is never a gamer. In fact he's the opposite, since he always chokes at the biggest stage. The runner you're thinking of was Hocker.

LOL, Hocker didn’t even make the 1500m final and proceeded to lose in his main event for the entire year.

Im wary of it more than i think it. Last year it took awhile for it to come out how bad things were. The guy loves racing, skipping racing is plainly a concern.

No they didn’t.
Yes people were concerned about Jakobs meet withdrawals throughout last year. For a December itd be a big whoop but for a guy who hasnt had consistent training since March and whose brothers started experiencing career-sabotaging injuries around this age its concerning. Again hope its being cautious and we see him running 3:28 or 7:21 in Lieven.

What people say on this board can mean jack. Jakob and his crew said he suffered an achilles strain back in April when it actually happened. The guy I was responding to was factually incorrect 🛑

No they didn’t.
You are factually incorrect. Go back and read the threads. Lots of optimists said it was no big deal when he pulled out of meets. They said he was saving himself for when it really mattered. They said his workouts were looking great and he was going to win gold in Tokyo. It's all in the archives.

I thought you meant what Jakob and his crew meant. In your case, yes you are right.

It is a little wary, but is it actually so inconcievable to think that he's thinking, "dang I race so much throughout the year, maybe I should race less and try something new?" Outside of Josh Hoey, I can't think of a single 800m-Marathon guy who has raced with the frequency Jakob has from 2022-March 2025. I don't think Jakob cares about XC as much as you think. I've seen plenty of interviews to know that he knows that outdoors is where it matters most. We'll see by indoors if he wants to show his cards of course. If he doesn't then the worrying is warranted of course! BUT, Jakob's main goal are those three WRs and he isn't stupid, he knows setting the 1500m, Mile, and 5000m WRs would set him a class apart from any runner in history and would put him right up there with Bekele/Kipchoge/El G/Rudisha. I'd understand if he would want a more measured and injury free buildup from October-May.
