How in tf did Verona not get it done and qualify? 3rd at Midwest in a loaded field over some really solid teams. Won their conference meet last week. They qualify 3 individuals but not the team. Crazy loaded sectional which makes no sense when you look at neighboring sectionals and who qualified. WIAA did them no favors but are they the best team to not qualify in the last 10 years while having all their top guys running?
Verona basically only runs on flat courses throughout the season, which, while they produce fast times, do nothing to prepare them for the hilliness of what is ironically their home course. Meanwhile, Madison West races at Parkside and Marquette which both do a lot to get you ready for the kinds of hills on that course
You're grasping at straws with that Midwest comparison. A 54-team invite is entirely different compared to a 12-team sectional. Low sticks matter way more in big invites and the same can be said about packing up at sectionals. Deforest had 5 in the top 21, West 5 in the top 20, Verona 5 in the top 27, and Middleton 5 in the top 29. All four of those teams had good days, it's just unfortunate that they were all in the same sectional.
Madison West was at 82 points at the 2 mile mark and got it down to 61. Their #3 runner Darley was responsible for 12 of those points. 5:27/10:56/16:42 what a masterclass in negative splitting. Verona held steady at 64, they were just outclassed in an absolutely brutal sectionals race where 21 guys dipped under 17.
LaFollette puts 4 under 16:36 to win their sectional after a poor 6th place showing at Conference. Mukwonago is a flat course but kudos to them.
If you ever ran the new Verona course, you'll know the best strategy is to stay measured until the downhill at the 2 mile mark, at which point you should put the foot on the gas because it's all flat until the hill at the very end.
Times mean absolutely nothing when everyone lines up next week.
How will those times compare with their state times? LRC anons investigate
It has to be short, but it is a nice ego boost for street cred.
A race was held there early in September, and most of those kids ran PBs, and then didn’t run anywhere close to those September times at wherever they ran at sectionals this weekend.

LRC internet sleuthing done.
More than an ego boost, it's completely dishonest to cut the course short. It's teaching the student-athletes that if they cant win, they can always cheat!

Probably because Marks retired?
Or maybe Madison West decided to go out more conservatively at the beginning and it worked for them
for girls imagine being brook east, homestead, germantown, pewaukee, hamilton, preble, pulaski, eau claire, holmen, stevens point, marshfield or verona and staying home next weekend and having to see wisconsin lutheran, mukwonago and westosha get through what is this state doing with sectional assignments
