I think many of us assume that Jingy sucks at 400-800. I'm willing to bet that he is much faster at those shorter distances than the general perception. When he can close a 5k in 1:49, I cannot help thinking that he could be a 1:43 guy. Surely he can run a 400m in 46/47. The way he has sprinted the last 100m-150m on some races has me convinced of this.
Half of the posters on this board seem to be under the strange idea that "being faster at shorter distances = better kick at end of race".
Kicking at the end of (most) race(s) is a function of your fitness. It doesn't matter what your 800 best is in a 1500 when you are kicking at PB or near PB pace.
Very true. Heck, Pre ran a 3:54 mile but went down in history as " having no kick"
Do we have any insight into pure speed development in his training? Seems that Kessler (who we can assume has much greater 400-800 potential) does very similar “Norwegian” aerobic work, but also implemented more gym work and raw speed D (40-80 meters all out). To me it seems that Jakob has the requisite speed over the last 4/300 meters, but doesn’t have the same gear shift or mechanics that Hocker/Kerr. He’s fast enough, but it takes him longer to reach his top end whereas they seem to turn it on much more abruptly when it counts
Kerr doesn’t have that fast a gear shift but he has a nice top-end speed when he gets going. Meanwhile for Kessler he has a great top speed obviously but doesn’t have Hockers burst and admits as much. Hocker does varied paces under Ben Thomas as does Kerr (eg the 56/50 800m and some 300 cutdowns we’ve seen). Jakobs problem is not the acceleration of his kick so much as it’s his strategy which results in a weak last 50 meters if he doesn’t manage his energy properly.
Young Ethiopians are too soft. Haile and Bekele would made the pace really hurt. Leading slow 5000m with 500 meters to go is basically being a pacer.
I always think of that insane 2004 Athens 10K with Bekele, Sileshi Sihine and Geb. They weren't running WR pace, but they were being just brutal about it. Throwing in 60 second laps every few laps to burn off anyone running with them. Just the occasional fast ass lap every few laps. They made sure that even the slower pace was gonna hurt like hell.
His worst tactical mistake was letting Hocker come inside him at the finish. You don’t lead the race just to let someone come inside.
I think Jakob did very fine the last 100m -fading runners that block the other athletes on the home straight should be DQed in my opinion. I’m a Jakob fan, but I want him winning fair and square…

Um.....did you see him go from 1st to 4th over that "very fine" last 100m?
Everyone going slow for him was not a brilling Jingy tactic. Not even a Jingy tactic at all! It was a bad everyone else tactic.
Everyone else wasn't in the shape to do what was needed, though. That's the real issue with this stuff. You run 12:36 one month, next month you feel like 13:10

I used both the words fine and fading -pretty obvious that I meant his “honourably” conduct on the home straight (not unnecessarily blocking Cole), and not him doing his best last 100m running shape wise….

Incorrect, remember you are talking to an RF Expert here, who has exquisite sense of space, and, time, remember that!!!!!! Guys like me skillfully know when the space and time is RIPE and when it's not!!!!
I'm telling you that Jakob can close however fast he wants in a 5k with 1:49 and all but his all out PB would still not be faster than 1:46/1:47, you feeling me sir????? And that's because Jakob is a pure endurance guy, remember his obsession with threshold workouts right sir??????? He also admitted he really really sucks at 1500m, so how can he be better than Kerr or Wightman at 800m which is even shorter than 1500m in which he sucks big time???????? You are not making any sense to the exquisite sensing RF Expert here sir!!!!!!!
Jakob's 2024 800m best time will only be 1:48 right now and yet he will still run 1:49 to close a 5000m because 13:30 (avg pace in the Paris 5000m final before he closed hard) is virtually a standing walk and jog leisurely pace for him, you feeling me sir?????
You gotta learn from me how, where, when, why to push the issue and press on the accelerator pedal and when to release and let the matter rest. That's where I'm extremely good at doing!!!!
Nah come on now man, Jakob does not even have half as good sprint mechanics as my man Josh KERR!!!!!!!!!
Have you seen Jakob sprint even with his 1:49????? He can't spread his legs wide enough to cover enough real estate space!!!!!!!!!!! Jakob does not have a powerful stride, he only has a smooth stride. But smooth isn't enough to be the 1500m WR holder you feeling me sir????
El G has POWER in his stride, he covered enough real estate in fast enough time, in often enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And remember El G had very bad shoes and slow af track surfaces!!!!!! So you can imagine how much POWER El G had over weak and slow men like Jakob and Josh KERR!!!!!!!!!!!
Men of the Y generation are just so weak!!!!!!! Can't imagine the women who would be even weaker!!!!!
Jakob has to know by now he can't lead from too far out. If he didn't run the fast lap 55 I dont think he would have won. It will be very interesting to see his tactics moving forward. Especially in a race without a rabbit.
The dude has won 3 global 5000m in a row, and he has lost 3 global 1500m in a row.
On every 5000m I think he is a genius. And on every 1500m I shout at the screen "Wtf are you doing?"
In Tokyo he was brilliant when he started hard, then followed for 1000m.
What happened since then? Does the 1500m freak him out? Does he put too much pressure on himself?
Discus.
I dont think its brilliant tactics. I think its more that many of the guys in the 5000 meter final ran way below par. If the final had been run and won in 12.35 jakob wouldnt have even gotten a medal.

That's correct darling!!!!! I'm quite surprised at how tame the ethiopian world leader ran the 5k final. Kenenisa Bekele and Sileshi Sihine would be infuriated on the side at such horrendous display and performance.
Jakob had 3 hard 1500m rounds in his legs and nobody in the 5000m final knew to make it a 12:50 race at least??????? I'm also in fury if I were Bekele and Haile Geb watching the race!!!
Kerr is a strictly 8/15 runner and hasn't been able to put up a better time in the 800 than 1:45, and just now beat his last PB in the 1500 from Tokyo, why on Earth would anyone think he'd be able to put up a sub 12:50 5k?
Probably they do because he is an 8:00 2 miler.
Basically the same reason why anybody believes Jakob can run faster than 12:48, in other words.

jakob had the 5000 won after the ethiopeans tactics blew up in their faces so hard in the 10000. with that result, they weren't going to go out and try the same thing again, and it became every man for himself.
you can call the 5000 watered down, but jakob destroyed the no.2 fastest runner of all-time, who put in a legitimate effort from 600 out to gap the field.
it was only watered down in the fact that Yomif wasn't there. nobody else mattered.
