No he is not a novice. I am not either. Asphalt is, if it is not the most common surface, it is close, at least in the US, for marathons, as far as I know.
You are a novice as well. You have zero understanding of who "Concrete Runner" is. If you did you would not be talking about asphalt vs. concrete.
Yes, but Carlos Lopes had vast experience at 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He was the second fastest of all time when he won gold in the LA Olympic marathon. Jenny Simpson has no credentials at those distances, as far as I know.

No credentials, other than being the US champion in the 5000 and holding the NCAA record for 14 years.
I'm not sure how much we can extrapolate from the 1:10, especially for a middle distance runner. I think logically one should expect a bit more drop-off than a pure long distance runner as you go up to the marathon.
I think most can accept that a good day for her is 15-20, but top 3 is very unlikely. I'll be happy if she does it though.

14:56.26 for 5000m.
Years ago. Lopes racing was close to his marathon performance. Simpson hasn't done anything close to that 5K time in years, will have no bearing on upcoming trials.

Ancient history. How about the last 24 months? Zip.
Will drop out at 18 and show up in a spring marathon. Same will happen to about 10 of the top 50 seeds.
This is the more likely scenario. A newbie isn't prepared for what the gremlins will do. Especially a middle distance runner trying to run the marathon.
Well kudos to those who have some idea. So many don’t.

I listened to Jenny on Tollefson’s podcast, and I got a bit fired up. I thought she would be getting the pacing down training with her husband. I thought, this is champion Jenny, and she will be there at the end to compete.
But then I recently saw an Instagram reel if her running, and I thought, “uhhh, this could be a problem.”
She won by being fast-twitch. It will possibly take years to convert over, and in doing so, the size of her legs will get smaller.

…meaning, currently, she doesn’t physically look like a marathoner (to my eyes).

Now to try and be fair and objective, I just asked myself, “Does Helen Obiri (besides her radical running form) have the physical appearance of a marathoner?”
