They moved to a place with few inhabitants. Bought up large tracts of land. Made dramatic improvements to the land (drained malarial filled swamps) and brought industry to the region. Established a Democracy, and Defended their territory from multiple attempts to eradicate their existence.
Land constantly changes hands In the world. Where I live has been controlled by multiple Indian tribes, has been uninhabited, was part of Spain, part of Mexico and is now the US. The current governance of this land likely affords me the best standard of living this land has ever seen.
The same can likely be said for the Palestinians who live or work in Israel. Several hundred thousand cross into Israel each day to work in Israel and earn a far better living than individuals living in surrounding countries (per capita income PPP is greater than 10 times what it is in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, etc.). Unfortunately the terrorist Hamas government in Gaza threatens the livelihoods of those Palestinians who wish to live and work in peace and share in the fruits of industry provided by the Jewish inhabitants. Israel has the second best per capita income of the entire Middle East (and they have it without oil money, so it is broadly shared, as opposed to the middle eastern kingdoms where the opulently wealthy that control the oil revenue toss breadcrumbs to the lower classes). The Israeli Democracy can serve as a beacon of hope for the Middle East if the surrounding nations can learn it is in their best interest to live in peace.
