In just reading the rules of this controversial "wildcard" situation that has even allowed him to potentially run Sunday, this even reinforces the logic behind my hypothesis above. If he runs the 3000m he's doing it without the incentive of the prizemoney because he's ineligible. To me that means the only reason he would do it is if he's going after a time and that is obviously the WR. I don't feel like he would be messing around with anything else given he's already run 3000m in well under 7min22 seconds (the final 3000m of his 3218m 2 mile).
So I feel like if we see him warming up on Sunday he's going to go for it. Now obviously if he drops the mile then he's 100% going for it - if he doesn't and runs it I still think there is a possibility he doesn't run the 3 because as mentioned I think he would have to be in alltime historic shape well beyond anything we have ever seen from an MD athlete in history to even run sub 3.46 and then sniff that 3000m mark.
Also was reading the front page article about the "industry insider" upset about the "new" wildcard situation just implemented which was allowed Mu to start after having zero points and not even a world title to justify it, and also J.I basically having the 5000m changed to a 3000m clearly to suit him - when he also technically didn't qualify (at least he has the world title). Well this is what happens when you give a final that you qualify for to a meeting that is completely funded by a sporting goods company that also funds athletes careers. As mentioned in another thread on Mu, these athletes making big $ from Nike have appearance clauses written into their contracts specifically for Pre and contractually need to show up. Adidas athletes have it written into their deals for the adi meets (formerly Boston and now the Atlanta city games). So this has WA in a weird position where the primary sponsor of your entire meeting (that pays for the athletes to all get there and most probably stumps up at least some portion of the prizemoney), says "we need these athletes on the start line and honestly we don't care about your points system". And the fact it just came in this year tells you something - previously the DL finals were Zurich and Brussels - no need for the "wildcard" exemptions there because those meetings aren't sponsored by a footwear company that contractually require certain athletes to run there. Thanks to the Nike Prefontaine Classic this will now always exist but it will never be utilized again like it is this season - unless Pre gets the DL final ever again.
